Lesson Plan to Teach Expectations - Bathroom

1. Expectation/Location: Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Safe/Bathroom
2. Definition and Critical Attributes/Rules
Be Responsible – *Always flush *Go directly to and from the restroom *Wash hands after using the restroom *Put paper towels in the trash can *Use no more than 1 pump of soap and 3 pumps of paper towels *Report any problems to staff/adult
Be Respectful - *Be quiet in the restroom area *Quickly take care of business so others are not kept waiting *Use school property and personal property appropriately *Wait patiently for your turn at the restroom and water fountain
Be Safe - *Only one person per stall *Close stall door carefully and quietly *Keep floor and sink areas dry and clean

Go to and from the bathroom using appropriate hall behavior
Do business and get out quickly
Be quiet
Flush after using toilet
Keep hands, feet, and objects to self
Using personal and school property appropriately

4. Activities to Enhance Skill Development
Introduce the expectation, the rules and review the examples and non-examples with students. Have specific students demonstrate the examples (e.g. students who pose challenges) and have specific teacher demonstrates/discusses the non-examples as appropriate.
5. Activities to Check for Understanding
Discuss everyone having a turn in the bathroom
Role play everything except using toilet
Tell me, Show me except using toilet
Tell a friend, show a friend except using the toilet
Teacher demonstrates examples and non-examples and have students identify examples and non-examples
6. Activities to Extend Skill Development
Develop a T-chart to illustrate what it looks like and sounds like to use the bathroom when the expectations are being followed.
Role play and/or use demonstrations at least once a month
Write social stories for those students who have difficulty following the behavior expectations
