Group Project: Create Your Own Dystopia
A Dystopia is a vision, of an often futuristic society, which has developed into a negative version of Utopia (perfect society). A Dystopia is often characterized by an authoritarian or totalitarian form of government. It features different kinds of repressive social control systems, a lack or total absence of individual freedoms and expressions and a state of constant warfare or violence.
Your team’s poster should include the following (this is where you can divide the labor among yourselves):
· BACKSTORY/SETTING: A dystopian story has a backstory: a war, natural disaster or other terrifying event is introduced early on in the story to set the stage. What does society look like now?
· RIGHTS: A Bill of Rights (at least 5 rules your society lives by)
· PROPAGANDA: A government slogan or image that demonstrates the type of propaganda your government would use to control the people.
· PROTAGONIST You will need a hero in your story. This protagonist will at some point recognize that there is something wrong with the society and risk his or her life to do whatever he or she can to improve it. Describe your hero. Give him or her name; indicate what he or she does for a profession. How old is he or she? What is his or her concern with society and what will he or she do to save the society from itself?
· ANTAGONIST: You will need a villain in your story. Describe the dictator of your society. Give him or her name; indicate what he or she does for a profession. How old is he or she?
Your poster should be a cohesive mixture of text and illustrations. Text should be typed or NEATLY handwritten. Your visuals can be hand drawn, printed from the internet, collage, scrapbook, or other creative ways you can come up with. These projects will be displayed and will go in the project section of the gradebook, so advanced effort is required.
Each group will present their poster to the class. Each member of the group should participate in the presentation. (One student may explain the backstory, another the Bill of Rights, etc.)
