Lesson Plan title: Comparing illustrations to photographs

Unit: Theme 3, Selection 2 Cendrillon

Objective(s):

·  Students will view a variety of photographs of Martinique, the setting of our 2nd selection of Theme 3, "Cendrillon." Then students will select a photograph that , in their opinion, most closely resembles the illustrations in the anthology. Finally, students write an explanation to justify their opinion.

Students need to know how to open Microsoft Word to create a document.

Students need to know how to type inside a text box.

Students need to know how to copy and paste an image from a web site into a text box on a Microsoft Word document.

Students need to save the created document to their personal folders.

Procedure:

  1. Students come to the computer lab, turn on the computers, log-in, and launch Microsoft Word. Students need to open the file called "4_Reading_Theme3_Selection2_Comparing_photos_to_illus_worksheet.doc."
  2. Students follow the directions on the digital worksheet. First they need to minizimize Microsoft Word. Then they are to launch Internet Explorer, go to favorites, and select "Welcome to Marinique." If this is not listed under Favorites, go to www.martinique.org/index.htm.
  3. Click on Photo Gallery, which is the 2nd choice from the bottom of the list.
  4. Each students scrolls through the photo gallery to select a photograph that, in their opinion, closely resembles the illustrations in the selection, "Cendrillon."
  5. Copy and paste the image into the text box at the top of the electronic worksheet. This can be done in several ways:using the right button on the mouse, using the menu buttons under Edit, or using the shortcut buttons on the toolbar.
  6. Then students explain their photograph selection using complete sentences in the text box provided.
  7. Students should save their document in personalized folders. Click "File" then select "Save as." Each student needs to double click on his/her folder, then name the file "Martinique".

For assessment :

-did student paste a photograph onto the electronic worksheet?

-did student write each an explanation that justifies his/her opinion?

-did student use correct grammar and punctuation in his/her explanation?
