Classroom English:

Language Patterns:

·  Is it a (bird)?

·  Yes, it is.

·  No, it isn’t

·  Do you have a (frog)?

·  Yes I do. No, I don’t.

·  What does he have? What does she have?

·  He has a (frog.) She has a (frog).

·  What does he/she have? (He/she) has a (turtle).

·  Is it a (snake)? Yes it is. No, it isn’t.

Materials:

Drawing paper, pencils, crayons, bingo grids with nine spaces, one for each child, nine bingo markers for each child, pictures of animals with labels: cat, bird, frog, fish, turtle, mouse, rabbit, snake; drawing paper; construction paper; yardstick; string; paper clip; double-sided tape; magazines with pictures of animals to cut out; scissors, box or bag; slips of paper with animal names; Picture Cards: cat, bird, frog, fish, turtle, mouse, rabbit, snake, clock.

Realia: toy animals: cat, bird, frog, fish, turtle, mouse, rabbit, and snake

Into Activities

Warm-up/Accessing prior knowledge (5 minutes)

Welcome the class. Show students the toy animals. As you hold up each toy animal, model the new word and then ask the students to repeat. Follow the directions for Warming Up on page 53.

Through Activities

Page 53 Student Book (10 minutes)

Have the students open their books to page 53 and do the “Using Page 53” activities. You will need a cassette recorder for this activity. You will need a cassette recorder for this activity.

Page 54 Teacher’s Guide/Student Book (15 minutes)

Do the Using Page 54 activities on page 54 of the Teacher’s Guide. Students will use their books to answer questions about the pictures.

Page 54 Student Book (20 minutes)

Do the Having Fun activity Animal Sounds on page 54. Students at a higher level of language proficiency can respond with complete sentences. Then, if time permits, do Animal Bingo on page 54. You will need bingo grids and paper clips for this activity. Follow the directions in the Teacher’s Guide on page 54.

Page 55 Student Book (15 minutes)

Have students open their student books to page 55.

Go to Teacher’s Edition, page 55, and skip the Warming Up activity. Go directly to Using Page 55. Follow the Instructions for Using Page 55. You will need a cassette recorder for this activity. Students will draw a picture of a pet and then the rest of the class will ask “What is it?”

Page 56 Student Book (15 minutes)

Have students open their student books to page 56.

Go to Teacher’s Edition, page 56, and skip the Warming Up activity. Go directly to Using Page 56. Follow the Instructions for Using Page 56. Do the Having Fun Activity “Fishing for Pets”. Follow the directions on page 56 in the Teacher’s Guide.

You will need a yardstick or long stick, string, and a paper clip for this activity.

Page 57 Student Book (10 minutes)

Help student turn the pages in their books to page 57. Do the Using Page 57 activities in the Teacher’s Guide page 48. You will need the cassette recorder here.

Page 58 Teacher’s Guide (15 minutes)

Do the Using Page 58 activities on page 58. Then, using the animal picture cards, do the “What’s Missing” activity in the Having Fun section on page 58.

Page 59 Student Book (10 minutes)

Have students look at page 59 and tell you what they see. Then act out the chant on page 59 of the Student Book, using the picture cards.

Page 59 Teacher’s Guide (10 minutes)

Follow the Using Page 59 Instructions. Students at a higher level of language proficiency can tell you if they like the chant – why or why not?

Page 60 Teacher’s Guide (15 minutes)

Follow the instructions on page 60 in the Teacher’s Guide Using Page 60. Model the response “It is a cat.” If time permits, do the Finish the Picture activity on page 60 of the Teacher’s Guide.

Pages 61 and 62 (20 minutes)

Follow the Warming Up review of vocabulary on page 61 of the Teacher’s Guide.

Then, Do Using Page 61 and Using Page 62, which are reviews of Units 5 and 6. Students listen to a recording and fill in the answers in their books.
