LESSON: OUTSIDE RELIEF PRINTS

PROCEEDURES:

Week one-

-Students are to develop a design on 6 x 4½” manila paper. I chose to limit the student’s designs to anything outside, excluding words, letters, and numbers.

-The students are to trace their design with an ebony drawing pencil. This will make the next step easier.

-The students are to transfer the reversed design to white drawing paper (6” x 9”) using tooling tools. Tape the design, face down, to the middle of the white paper. Rub the back of the design using a tool, so as to transfer the pencil onto the white paper. Be sure to trace the outer edge of the design.

-Remove the design and tape it face up, to a piece of printing styrofoam (4 1/2x6”). Trace over the design, transferring the design to the Styrofoam. Trace the design again directly onto the styrofoam to ensure the design is deep enough into the stryrofoam.

-The students are to glue Styrofoam to a piece of cardboard (4 1/2x6”).

Week two-

-Each student it to print 4 times on 6 “x 9” white paper, using black ink.

-The students will be printing a total of 5 prints. Instruct the students how to number and sign their prints.

-The students are to wash the ink off their Styrofoam using a damp sponge. Stress that cardboard does not react well to water.

-For the remainder of the class period, the students are to color the reversed design using colored pencil. The final print will show up much better if the students press hard on the colored pencil.

Week three-

-The students will need to finish coloring the reversed design.

-Before printing the final print, the students will need to add additional textures to black areas so colored pencil will show. The more textures the students add, the more color that will show through their print.

-The students then are to print the final print on top of the colored design. The teacher may need to align the print to make sure the register is correct.

-Sign and number the final print.

-One black/white print and the colored print are displayed side by side.

STUDENTS ART ROOM

Week one- pencil (not mechanical) manila paper- 4 ½” x 6”

Styrofoam

White drawing paper- 6” x 9”

Tooling tools

Week two- pencil white paper for printing

Plastic sheets

Ink and brayers

Colored pencils

Week three- pencil ink and brayers

Colored pencils
