LESSON 8: Present perfect Part 2

A)Example:

PETER: Have you travelled a lot Joanna?

JOANNA: Yes, I’ve been to many different countries abroad.

PETER: Really? Have you ever been to Australia?

JOANNA: Yes, I’ve been to Australia once.

PETER: What about New Zealand?

JOANNA: No, I haven’t been to New Zealand yet but I’d like to go.

Been to= visited

When we talk about a period of time that continues from the past until now, we use the present perfect simple. Here, Peter and Joanna are talking about the places Joanna has visited in her life (PERSONAL EXPERIENCE). The period continues until now.

Other examples: Have you ever eaten frog’s legs?

Have you ever done bungee-jumping? Yes, I have. I have done it twice already.

Has your dad ever found truffles? No, he has never found any.

You use present perfect simple with expressions indicating that the period continues from the past until now: just, recently, in the last few days, so far, for 2 hours, since yesterday……

Have you read a good book recently?

I haven’t seen my best friend in the last few days.

My parents have never visited a wax museum so far.

The history teacher has been ill for 2 days.

The history teacher has been ill since Tuesday.

B)We use the present perfect simple with today, this evening, this year, etc when these periods are not finished at the time of speaking.

I haven’t drunk any coffee this morning.

Kenny hasn’t studied languages well this year.

C)We also use present perfect simple to say it’s the (first) time something has happened.

Donna is having a driving lesson. It’s her first lesson.= It’s the first time Donna has driven a car.

Jerry has never played tennis before. It’s his first game.= It’s the first time Jerry has played tennis.
