LESSON #5 Looking Back: Paying Forward

December 21, 2013 - 10:30AM-11:30AM Heritage House at Wexner Heritage Village

Lesson Guide (6th Grade)

Objectives

Participants will:

·  Create two CD’s with music from the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and 60’s.

Students create a large game board (like Jeopardy) with questions to spark conversation between students and residents. Questions should center on things that happened during the 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s. Let students know that the goal is to:

1.  engage with the residents, have fun, partner with them during the game show

2.  ask questions of the residents to discover what they have learned or experienced in their lives

3.  share what you learn about your partner when asked by game show host

4.  write down what the residents say about each of the decades so that we can preserve it and learn from it

5.  return your memory collection paper to our teacher

6.  collect pictures and artifacts from the era and display them at WHV

1.  Prepare memory collection sheets.

2.  Instruct 6th graders to dress like Groucho Marx or in costumes from their research era.

LEARNING

·  Student groups study and research American cultures and history DURING Social Studies, from the 20’s, 30’s, 40’s and 50’s.

·  Create presentations to share with the entire class about the Era that they studied.

·  Create a Shadow Box with artwork depicting culture, art and history from the assigned eras.

·  Study and discuss (HO B. Aging and Jewish Tradition) and (HO C. Articles – Aging Awareness, Facts and Myths).

·  Create a Jeopardy Board Game using the facts and information they gathered

EXPERIENCE/ENCOUNTER

10:45AM-11:20AM Play the Game: MC will review the goals. Select contestant pairs from the audience to come up, share something about their lives and pick a category. Every correct answer is an instant winner. Winnings are candy. 1 piece per $100.

11:20AM-11:25AM: Wrap up the game, celebrate some of the things we learned. Remind the participants about the Deuteronomy quote “Ask your father and he will relate it to you and your elders and they will tell you”. Give participants food for thought that it is through the experiences of one’s elders that one can come to know oneself and the ways of God. Ask for contestants to share findings.

11:25AMAM0 Say goodbyes. “It was nice sharing my morning with you (their name)”
