Photoshop Classroom in a Book

Lesson 02 (45-60 mins approx)

If you are new to Photoshop and Bridge, the lessons below will help you familiarise yourself with this software.

If you have used Photoshop previously it is likely you will still learn new things by going through these introductory exercises.

If you find you have covered a topic already and understand it thoroughly, please move on to the next lesson.

Please complete the following -

Lesson 02 - p46 – p74 (Photo Corrections)

• Resolution and image size
• Straightening and cropping an image
• Auto Corrections
• Removing a colour cast
• Manually adjusting the tonal range
• Replacing colours in an image
• Adjusting lightness with the Dodge tool
• Adjusting saturation with the Sponge tool
• Repairing areas with the Clone Stamp tool
• Using the Spot Healing Brush tool
• Using the Healing Brush and Patch tools
• Applying the Unsharp Mask filter
• Saving an image for four colour printing

Please provide all Classroom in a Book exercises you complete on a disc at assessment time.

• Open images with Bridge
• Compare start to end
• Resolution and Image Size (300dpi v 72dpi (96 on PC)
• Dull, lacking in contrast
• Save as ‘02Working.PSD’
• Crop tool to 3.5inches x 2.5inches and straighten/crop
• Image > Auto Colour (+ other Auto Settings)
• File > Save as (a copy as a backup) ‘Auto.psd’
• Image > Adjustments > Shadow / Highlights
• Save and close

• Reopen 02Working.psd
• Colour Balance Adjustment layer to remove red colour cast
• Levels Adjustment layer to give contrast

Work on flat image!
• Image > Adjustments > Replace Colour
• Pipettes to add / subtract colour / sliders to adjust colour
• Dodge / Burn / Sponge
• Save
• Compare to Auto settings file

• Cloning tool (Repairing wall next to cap)
• Spot Healing brush (Removing dark spot on wall)
• Healing brush (Remove black graffiti stripe on wall)
• Patch tool (Remove graffiti, make sure Source selected, refine edge)
• Unsharp Mask filter
Amount = amount of sharpening
Radius = distance around each pixel
Threshold = how different sharpened pixels must be from surrounding area before Photoshop thinks of them as ‘edge pixels’ and sharpens them
