Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience– PreceptorCriteria

Applicants will be considered based upon practice and experience. Experienced pharmacists are ready to precept Pharm D students because of their on the job clinical training and experience.

In order to be a preceptor for advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPE), the applicant must:

  1. Possess a Pharmacy degree (for direct patient care rotations) or other health professional degree (for non-direct patient care rotations).
  2. Have a minimum of two years of experience in their profession. Pharmacists who have completed post-graduate training (e.g. residency) require only one year of experience.
  3. Maintain the appropriate licensure to practice in good standing with the respective licencing body (e.g. Ontario College of Pharmacists).
  4. Provide adequate time to regularly meet with the student for teaching and feedback.
  5. Direct patient care rotations – maintains a full-time direct patient care practice and is able to have daily contact with students. If applying as a co-preceptor, he/she can be part-time but must provide full-time coverage between the 2 co-preceptors.
  6. Non-direct patient care rotations - contact time should be a minimum of 1-2 hours at least three times per week.
  7. Participate in Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy Preceptor Development Program.*
  8. APPE preceptor certificate: complete modules Core A, B, C & D for direct patient care rotations, and Core A, B & C for non-direct patient care rotations.
  9. Within 3 years of application, complete other preceptor development certificates and/or training to enhance teaching and learning.

  1. Show a commitment to professional development and life-long learning (e.g. extra training/certification, undertakes regular professional development, teaching, publications, awards, etc.)

The Office of Experiential Education (OEE) acknowledges that the site coordinators of Academic Teaching partner institutions are able to identify APPE preceptors without a formal application and in consultation with OEE faculty, may adapt or make exceptions to the Preceptor Criteria guidelines where appropriate. To maintain an accurate and updated profile of all APPE preceptors, site coordinators are asked to provide the following information on all new preceptors:

1)Year of graduation

2)ACPR program (if applicable)

3)Number of years clinical experience

4)Past teaching experience (SPEP, EPE, APPE)

5)Current clinical practice area
