International Conference on Emerging Trends in TeachingEnglish Language and Literature(2009)

The Department of English and Foreign Languages, Alagappa University,Karaikudi organized an International Conference on “Emerging Trends in Teaching Language and Literature”on 4th and 5th December 2009.The sub-themes of the global meet included Teaching of English,Tamil,Sanskrit,Malayalam, Telugu,Kannada,Hindi, Greek, Malay, Chinese, Urdu, French and German.Delegates from abroad and across the country participated in the conference.They articulated their views and shared their experience in language teaching.Overseas experts who served as resource persons in the Conference included Dr.Andreas L. Katonis,University of Thessaloniki,Greece, to speak on Greek literature, Mr.Julius I.Irudayasamy, Dhofar University, Oman to speak on internet-based Language Lab in teaching Listening Skills, Dr.Vijayaletchumi University Putra,Malaysia to speak on Malay Language and Literature,Dr.Kek Lian Wah,University Putra,Malaysia to speak on Teaching Chinese Language,Dr.M.Paramasivam,University Putra,Malaysia to speak on Role of Linguistics in Language Teaching and Dr.Seethalakshmi to speak on the Role of Mass Media in Teaching Tamil for the Diaspora.National level experts who spoke on the occasionwere Dr.T.N.Aravamudhan on Sanskrit Language Teaching, Dr.Lakshmi Iyer on Teaching of Hindi,Dr.Marie Pierre Augustin,Head,Department of French,M.K.University on Media in French Language Teaching; Dr.Thangam Moorthy, Member, Sahitya Academy on Teaching of Modern Tamil Poetry,Dr.B.Krishnamoorthy,Dean,SASTRA University on Discourse -Based English Pedagogy: and Dr.Batsha,Head,Department of Urdu, JMC,Trichy on Teaching of Urdu Language and Literature.

Prof.Dr.S.Sudalimuthu,Syndicate Member,delivered the presidential address. Professor Dr.K.Chellappan, former Director, State Institute of English,Chennai and former Head,Department of English,Bharathidasan University delivered the keynote address.Prof.Dr.A.Shenbagavalli,Registrar,Alagappa University delivered the welcome address.

Dr.R.Natarajan,Syndicate Member and Head,Department of Mathematics,Alagappa University offered felicitations.Dr.S.Subbiah, Head i/c,Department of English and Foreign Languages and Organizing Secretary of the Conference presented the thematic introduction of the Conference. Mr.P.Madhan, Assistant Professor, Department of English and Foreign Languages proposed a vote of thanks. Earlier the Conference Souvenir was released by Dr.K.Chellappan. Two plenary sessions and four technical sessions with six parallel sessions each, were conducted on both the days of the Conference. A total number of 410 papers were presented.

Prof.Dr.P.Ramasamy, Vice-Chancellor,Alagappa University,presided over the valedictory function.Tiruchy Siva,Member of Rajya Sabha delivered the valedictory address.Mr.V.Kasinathan and Dr.M.Selvam,Members of the Syndicate,Alagappa University delivered appreciation address. Dr.M.Pandi,Dean,Faculty of Arts and Head,Department of Tamil welcomed the gathering.Dr.S.Subbiah,Associate Professor and Head I/C, Department of English and Foreign Languages proposed a vote of thanks.Dr.N.Kalaithasan,Visiting Professor,Department of English & Foreign Languages summed up the two-day proceeding of the conference.

International Conference on Trends in Modern Literature: East & West (2011)

The Department of English and Foreign Languages of Alagappa University, Karaikudi organized an International Conference on ‘Trends in Modern Literature: East and West’ on 4th & 5th January 2011. Prof.S.Sudalaimuthu, Vice Chancellor, Alagappa University presided over Inaugural function of the Conference. Dr.S.M.Ramasamy, Vice Chancellor, Ghandhigram Rural University inaugurated the Conference. Dr.K.Chellappan, Former Director of State Institute of English, Chennai delivered Keynote address. Dr.R.Karpagakumarvel, Vice Chancellor, Madurai Kamaraj University delivered Special address. Dr. Mustafizur Rahman, Vice –Chancellor, People’s University, Bangladesh delivered Keynote Address. Dr.S.Subbiah, Head i/c, Department of English & Foreign Languages delivered welcome address and presented the thematic introduction of the conference.

Four hundred and eleven delegates from all over the world registered their names and 350 Presented papers in the Conference. More than 20 experts from countries such as Canada, Greece, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Professors of Indian Universities from Karnataka, West Bengal, Ananthapur, Chennai, Madurai and Pondicherry delivered speeches in the Plenary Sessions. There were three plenary sessions with paper presentation by experts from various Literatures and three technical sessions with a total number of 27 parallel sessions. In the plenary sessions Mr.ThangamMoorthy, Member, Sahitya Academy spoke on trends in modern Tamil poetry. Dr.N.N. David from Canada traced the trends in modern French literature.Dr. Sarada Ramani, Former Reader from University of Madras spoke on the modern trends in Hindi Literature;Dr.S.Prabahar from M.S.University delivered a lecture on theory and practice of culture studies. The first plenary session was followed by parallel technical sessions.

On the second day during the second plenary session, Prof. Dr.N.Kalamani, Bharathidasan University spoke on an eco-critical approach to Indian literature.Dr.Seethalakshmi, Nan yang Technological University, Singapore, traced the trends in modern Tamil literature in Singapore. Dr.Vijayaletchumi of University Putra, Malaysia spoke on trends in Malay literature. Dr.Amirthanjalli Sivabalan from Jaffna University, Sri Lanka discussed the trends in modern British literature.Dr.Siddhalilng Pattanshetty spoke on trends in Kannada literature and Dr.S.Kanagaraj, Madurai Kamaraj University delivered a lecture on translation in modern British and Tamil literature. Dr.Vijayasundari from Bharathidasan University spoke on Bharathiyar’s Contribution to modern Tamil literature. This was followed by second technical sessions with parallel sessions. In the third plenary session, Professor Dr.V.Ayothi from Bharathidasan University discussed the trends in contemporary Canadian literature.Dr.K.Sekar of Bharathidasan University, delivered a lecture on contribution of poet Kannadasan to Modern Tamil literature.

The Valedictory function was presided over by Prof.S.Sudalaimuthu, Vice Chancellor, Alagappa University. Dr.K.Meena, Vice Chancellor, Bharathidasan University delivered Valedictory Address. Thavathiru Kundarakudi Ponnambala Adigalar delivered special Address.
