CHECKLIST:

Register your rifles and other valuable items and equipment (cameras, binoculars etc) with US Customs and get a form 4457.

Fill out form SAP520 (see link). Do NOT sign it. It is to be signed in the presence of the SAP officer at Johannesburg International Airport (OR Tambo) when you claim your rifle.

60 rounds of ammo per rifle should be enough.

No automatic or semi-automatic rifles.

No two Rifles of the same caliber per hunter.

Pack ammo and rifles separately. Pack ammo in original factory boxes.

To expedite time spent registering your rifles at the SAP offices at the airport, mail copies of your rifle paperwork to me:

Notify your bank and credit card company that you will be travelling abroad, to facilitate foreign transactions.

Establish what your credit card pin number is, so that you can draw cash from an ATM

Check the expiry date of your PASSPORT. You need two consecutive blank pages in your passport for South African stamps. Make copies of your passport, as a backup should you lose it.

Hunting clothes – 3 changes, camouflage is allowed in South Africa. If you like to wear shorts, zip-off trousers are perfect.

Casual wear for around the campfire.

Two jackets – it’s a good idea to wear layers that you can take off as the temperature rises during the day. Mornings and evenings are cool.

Have your Outfitters address, Invitation to Hunt and Information forms with you on the airplane. You will need them to fill out the immigration form upon arrival in South Africa.
