Coach Development Model from their Minor Hockey Development Guide.

Job Descriptions for Coaches

Head Coach

  • Serve as the official spokesperson on behalf of the team
  • Coordinate the delegation of responsibilities to the assistant coach and manager
  • Plan on and off-ice activities in consultation with the assistant coach
  • Coordinate player evaluation and selection in conjunction with the Coach Mentor.
  • Plan, implement and control pre-game preparation and communication with the team
  • Design the practice plans in consultation with the assistant coach
  • Coach the team in all games and practices
  • Establish rules for the team and oversee the supervision of the players
  • Submit a year-end report which contains the following information – evaluation of player’sperformance, evaluation of team’s performance, outline of practice plans and game strategy and recommendations on how the program can be improved.
  • Report to the association through the Coach Mentor or designate

Assistant Coach

  • Assist with player evaluation and the player selection process
  • Assist with planning, organizing and conducting practices
  • Assist with pre-game preparation
  • Assist with the operation of the team during the games
  • Assist with scouting and evaluation of opponents
  • Assist with the supervision of players off and on the ice
  • Assist with the formulation of the game plan
  • Submit a year-end report to the head coach containing player observations
  • Report to the Head Coach

Minimum Qualifications

No previous coaching experience required
Criminal Record Check
Respect in Sport
Three (3) written references supporting candidate’s ability to work with children

8 STEPS TO COACH SELECTION

1. THE COACH MENTOR POSITION

The Coach Mentor has the following responsibilities:

  • Recruit coaches
  • Contact person for prospective coaches
  • Distribute and collect applications
  • Create and chair committees for screening
  • Interviewing and final selection
  • Contact successful and unsuccessful candidates
  • Provide new coaches with their initial instructions
  • Ongoing evaluation of coaches

2. COMMITTEE SELECTION

  • The Coach Mentor will form a Selection Committee to ensure fairness
  • The Selection Committee will consist of no more than five people
  • Committee Members will include a member of the Executive, a person with coaching experience from the Steering Committee, and a neutral person unrelated to the Association
  • The Coach Mentor will chair the committee
  • Any conflict of interest on this committee must be avoided

3. APPLICATIONS

All Head Coaches, new or returning, will be required to complete an application form.

Initial Contact: The Coach Mentor will be available for all prospective coaches to

contact. This person will be responsible for the distribution and collection of coaching applications.

The Application Form: The application form can be found in the Appendix.

Screening Applicants: Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications on the job description will be short-listed for an interview.

4. THE INTERVIEW PROCESS

  • The Selection Committee will interview short-listed applicants
  • Short-listed applicants will be interviewed based on the following selection criteria:

  • The interview questionnaire can be found in the Appendix
  • Each applicant will be asked the same questions (plan for a 1 hour interview)
  • Interview notes and the final score will be retained by the Association

MODULE: Minor Hockey Association Coach Development

5. FINAL SELECTION

  • Each member of the Selection Committee will individually score the interview
  • The Selection Committee will discuss individual results and gain consensus on the final score
  • The applicant with the highest final score will be awarded the position
  • The decision of the Selection Committee will be final

6. CONTACTING CANDIDATES

  • All applicants, whether successful or not, will be contacted by the Coach Mentor
  • Unsuccessful candidates, or coaches who were not given their first choice, should always be given reasons for the decision by the Coach Mentor
  • Unsuccessful candidates will be sent written “thank you” letters by the Coach Mentor
