Leighton Education Project: Learning Support Assistant

Job title / Learning Support Assistant
Salary: / NJC scale point 18 - 21: £20,665 - £22,649 pro rata, including Inner London weighting
Hours: / 26 hours, term time only (this could be job share)

Location: / ERC offices in Kentish Town
Job purpose: / To provide learning support for students aged 16-25 with mild to moderate learning difficulties and/or disabilities

Main Responsibilities

  1. To support learners in achieving targets set in their individual learning programmes.
  2. To provide support according to needs on a one-to-one or small group basis in the classroom or with other planned activities.
  3. To assist the teachers to recognise and support emotional, cultural and pastoral needs of learners.
  4. To accompany learners to off-site activities facilitating travel and maximising wider opportunities for learners and learning.
  5. To supervise students during lunch and break times, and at the beginning and end of the day where necessary.
  6. To assist tutors in maintaining up to date records, student profiles, learning aims and outcomes.
  7. To assist tutors with monitoring and tracing of students’ progress by taking part in the assessment and recording of data including progress of students on placement.
  8. To liaise with parents, guardians, external organisations and representatives (where appropriate).

  1. To follow all other Elfrida Rathbone Camden policies and procedures including those relating to respect to Confidentiality, Equality and Diversity, and Health & Safety.
  2. To identify and report any safeguarding concerns, and in all work to follow ERC’s Child Protection and Vulnerable Adult policies.
  3. To carry out other duties as appropriate and required.

Personal Specification

Essential

  1. Knowledge and experience of working with young people or adults with special educational needs or a disability, and identifying their barriers to learning
  1. Knowledge and understanding good practice in quality learning support for young people and/or disabled learners
  1. Experience of working with young people towards a range of outcomes including education, health and care support
  1. Experience of networking with a range of staff to achieve outcomes and opportunities for young disabled people
  1. Experience of report writing and carrying out monitoring assessment of learners progress
  1. The ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with young people
  1. The ability to work flexibly under pressure and using own initiative to support learners and respond to problems
  1. Knowledge of inclusive practices when providing information and delivering activities
  1. Experience of creating accessible learning materials
  1. Experience of using tools and strategies to support learners with sensory and emotional support needs
  1. The ability to communicate effectively with young people and have excellent written and oral communication skills.
  1. Good level of computer literacy, in particular in relation to the use of Word, Excel and monitoring databases and also use of email and internet.

Desirable

  1. A Teaching Assistant/Learning Support qualification

The working hours for this post will either be 9am – 3.30pm or 9.30am – 4pm.
