Leighton Education Project: Learning Support Assistant

Job purpose: / To provide learning support for students aged 16-25 with mild to moderate learning difficulties and/or disabilities
Main Responsibilities
- To support learners in achieving targets set in their individual learning programmes.
- To provide support according to needs on a one-to-one or small group basis in the classroom or with other planned activities.
- To assist the teachers to recognise and support emotional, cultural and pastoral needs of learners.
- To accompany learners to off-site activities facilitating travel and maximising wider opportunities for learners and learning.
- To supervise students during lunch and break times, and at the beginning and end of the day where necessary.
- To assist tutors in maintaining up to date records, student profiles, learning aims and outcomes.
- To assist tutors with monitoring and tracing of students’ progress by taking part in the assessment and recording of data including progress of students on placement.
- To liaise with parents, guardians, external organisations and representatives (where appropriate).

- To follow all other Elfrida Rathbone Camden policies and procedures including those relating to respect to Confidentiality, Equality and Diversity, and Health & Safety.
- To identify and report any safeguarding concerns, and in all work to follow ERC’s Child Protection and Vulnerable Adult policies.
- To carry out other duties as appropriate and required.
Personal Specification
Essential
- Knowledge and experience of working with young people or adults with special educational needs or a disability, and identifying their barriers to learning
- Knowledge and understanding good practice in quality learning support for young people and/or disabled learners
- Experience of working with young people towards a range of outcomes including education, health and care support
- Experience of networking with a range of staff to achieve outcomes and opportunities for young disabled people
- Experience of report writing and carrying out monitoring assessment of learners progress
- The ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with young people
- The ability to work flexibly under pressure and using own initiative to support learners and respond to problems
- Knowledge of inclusive practices when providing information and delivering activities
- Experience of creating accessible learning materials
- Experience of using tools and strategies to support learners with sensory and emotional support needs
- The ability to communicate effectively with young people and have excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Good level of computer literacy, in particular in relation to the use of Word, Excel and monitoring databases and also use of email and internet.
Desirable
- A Teaching Assistant/Learning Support qualification

The working hours for this post will either be 9am – 3.30pm or 9.30am – 4pm.
