JOB SUMMARY:

The Assistant Preparator, Technical and A/V assists with museum-quality art handling related to installation and de-installation, as well as supports Museum departments as they plan and execute events with a particular specialization in the set up and running of audio/visual equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Installation and preparation of technical equipment for artist or exhibition specific installations.
  • Assist with movement of artwork (big/small/heavy/light) and crates; cleaning and preparation of gallery spaces, packing, unpacking, hanging artwork; climbing ladders and scaffolding; painting, sanding and light demo of walls; lighting and graphics.
  • Assists in construction of display elements and crates; may include working with woodshop equipment, solvents, and hand-held and stationary power tools.
  • Setup and operateaudio-visual needs for Museum events and meetings.
  • Ensure a safe work environment through knowledge of and adherence to MCASD safety policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Manual dexterity required to operate tools and equipment associated with electrical, plumbing; woodworking, general/minor construction.
  • Working with paint, paint fumes & chemical fumes associated with common industrial supplies.
  • Ability to carry out physical maneuvers associated with maintenance, repair, replacement and general upkeep of equipment and properties, which may include lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling up to 25-50 lbs.
  • Physical maneuvers also includes kneeling, crawling, climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, and reaching.
  • Ladder work including heights: 15-20+ feet.
  • Electrical wiring, lighting changes includes the ability to lift arms overhead for sustained period of time.
  • Must be able to physically move artwork (big/small/heavy/light) and crates; pack, unpack and crate artwork; install artwork; climb ladders and scaffolding; paint, sand and light demolition of walls.
  • Physical maneuvers comprise an estimated 90 percent of the work day and will vary from day to day.
  • Ability to work in standing and walking position 90 percent of the workday.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including irregular daytime hours, evenings, and some weekends.
  • Alternate shifts and/or locations includes local driving.
  • Special Environment Factors: Woodshop located in lower level of the Museum. Position requires work at multiple sites.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

One year recent, relevant experience or equivalent education and experience required in light construction for the fabrication of display elements and crates; and a safe working knowledge of woodshop equipment, solvents, and hand-held and stationary power tools. Knowledge and experience with the set up and operation of audio visual equipment. Experience with various types of performance and special events, including lectures, film, video, PowerPoint presentations, concerts, and receptions. Previous museum, gallery, or studio art experience a plus. Ability to make quick decisions and work well under pressure. Strong communication skills and the ability to interact appropriately with the public. Strong attention to detail in the performance of work. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work successfully in a team environment. Previous museum, gallery, or studio art experience a plus.
