LEGAL CHANGES ASSIGNMENT

Canadian Law (CLU3M1)

Choose 2 recent (within one week of presentation) Canadian news articles for this assignment. These 2 articles must reflect recent changes, or proposed changes in law. Remember, law as defined involves statutory as well as common law.

  • ARTICLE ONE WILL BE PRESENTED using a poster.
  • ARTICLE TWO WILL BE HANDED IN (in report format).

A. Presentation of Article One (Application and Communication)

The article will be presented to the class at various intervals. There is no overlap of articles permitted, so reserve your chosen article early, on the sign-up sheet. The presentations will be approximately 5-10 minutes in length for the article.

Required components of the presentations:

(i) Classify (review “Structure of Law” from unit 1), and explain your reasoning.

(ii) Explain what the change in law is, or will be. How have you interpreted this law? How will this change be applied in society? How will it be enforced?

Explain who is responsible for making/changing the law. Include all of the parties that would be involved in initiating as well as creating the law.

  1. Prepare two discussion (open-ended) questions for the class regarding the overall issues or laws in your articles. Don’t ask questions requiring yes or no answers.

Open-ended questions invite the speaker to explain, elaborate, clarify, rationalize, or justify his or her reasoning.

Examples:

“Can you describe what happened?”

“How do you see things changing?”

“Can you explain to me …?”

B. Poster of Article One (Communication)

The article will be mounted on a poster. Be creative. You may even add relevant graphics that depict your topic. See requirements below.

Requirements are:

  1. Neatly cut and paste article onto Bristol board.
  2. Copy numbers (i) and (ii) from the presentation components above, onto the board.
  3. Provide a prominent title which includes the name of the assignment and legal change topic. (ex. Legal Changes – Auto Insurance Rates
  4. Make the visual neat and attractive, as these will be displayed in class.
  1. Report of Article Two (Application and Communication)

Required components of the typed report:

(i) Classify (review “Structure of Law” from unit 1), and explain your reasoning.

(i) You must prepare a summary of the article in your own words. Please use full sentences in your summary - no point form or sentence fragments. The suggested length is approximately 1 page (double-spaced, font 12).

(iii) Explain what the change in law is, or will be. How have you interpreted this law? How will this change be applied in society? How will it be enforced?
