About Leeds Trinity University

In fewer than 50 years, Leeds Trinity University has transformed itself from two small Catholic teaching training colleges to an acclaimed university with an excellent track record for launching the careers of thousands of students.

While maintaining a reputation for excellence in the training of teachers, Leeds Trinity University has diversified to offer Foundation, Undergraduate and Postgraduate degrees in a range of subjects including Business, Education, Humanities, Media, Psychology and Sport. The University also has a long-established reputation for being one of the leading providers of journalism training in the country.

Our history

Leeds Trinity University's history dates back to the early 1960s when the two original Catholic teacher training colleges were founded in Leeds: Trinity College for women and All Saints College for men.

The original building work was completed at about the same time as England were winning the World Cup, with the two colleges opening in September 1966.

The 1980s were a crucial decade for the Institution as the two original colleges merged to become Leeds Trinity and All Saints, surviving the previous ten years in which all education colleges had come under a lot of pressure. This was also the period when the institution adapted and introduced new, non-vocational courses.

In the 1990s a course in Journalism was offered and the University subsequently went on to become one of the first places in the UK to offer degrees Sports Journalism.

A timeline detailing the full history of Leeds Trinity University is below:

In 2013, TV presenter Gabby Logan was announced as Leeds Trinity University’s first ever Chancellor. What’s more, Leeds Trinity University will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2016.

Community at its heart

In spite of expansion, Leeds Trinity has retained the community feel that makes it so special. The campus continues to develop, too, with various improvements being made to improve the great community including the £6m All Saints Court – 198 bedrooms with ensuite and self-catered facilities – which opened in September 2010 and the 3G Astroturf Pitch which was installed in September 2012).

Leeds Trinity University is continually investing in the campus with new, sustainable developments to improve facilities. To date more than £15m has been invested in Leeds Trinity University’s infrastructure and a further £25m is in the pipeline.

The University is proud to have some of the most satisfied students in the country, evidenced by the recent NSS results which revealed 88% of its 2014 graduates were satisfied with their course, against a national average of 86%. It also prides itself on its commitment to offering a truly personalised university experience where every student is treated as a name, not a number. This core ethos, which is inherent in everything the University does, enables students to benefit from personalised one-to-one support.

The University has a strong Catholic foundation and the chapel has always been a 'hub' of the campus. As an inclusive community, Leeds Trinity seeks to help all who live and work here to flourish.

Championing research and teaching excellence

The University is becoming increasingly renowned for research excellence, particularly in the Arts and Humanities, Sport and Exercise Sciences, Psychology, Education and Social Policy. It is home to the internationally-acclaimed Leeds Centre for Victorian Studies, which celebrates its 21st anniversary in September 2015.

Recently the University was awarded world-leading accreditation status on a section of research outputs, after being measured against a national framework for assessing research excellence in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).This world-leading research status will go a long way in forming part of its strategy to secure Research Degree Awarding Powers in 2020.

Leeds Trinity University has also enhanced its reputation in pedagogic research by creating an Institute for Childhood and Education. By pooling the expertise of its acclaimed departments of Primary Education, Secondary Education and Children, Young People and Families, the Institute will collaborate with sector agencies operating in Children’s Services and Education to develop innovative, research-based approaches to practice in this challenging area.
