Work pattern: Activitieswilltake placeduring and outside normalteachingweeksincluding some parts of the vacation periods. Most work will be carried out during ‘normal office hours’ although there will be an occasional requirement to work at evenings and weekends. We will work with you to plan your workload to ensure that this role does not clash with your academic priorities.

Role description

We need four enthusiastic and motivatedstudents to raise awareness and promote the value of the wide range of personal development activities and support which are part of the distinctive and exciting University of Leeds educational experience.

You will work closely with a wide range of staff from the Student Opportunity team to develop and deliver an effective communications plan and set of activities focussed on promoting the opportunities and support we provide.

Your main audience will be your fellow students, but you will also be involved in activities with potential students, University staff, alumni, employers and other external organisations. Your aim will be to highlight the breadth of opportunity and benefits of effective career planning,local and international work placements, internships, study abroad, volunteeringand global citizenship that equip students with the core skills, knowledge and understanding to be successful in their future lives and careers.

This is a new and exciting opportunity to develop and evidence your skills of leadership, initiative, planning, organisation, time management and communication to enhance your employability, benefit your fellow students and promote the University.

During the course of your internship, you will be mentored by the Careers Centre and you will work closely with the Learning Enhancementteam who will provide guidance and support to manage your work schedule.

Examples of things you may be involved in:

  • Promoting opportunities for students to develop their skills during International Week, Intro Week and LUU “Celebrate Week”
  • Developing new promotional materials and activities
  • Promoting the support available to students at Graduate Recruitment Fairs, Careers Fairs etc
  • Presenting at conferences in the UK and abroad to promote the opportunities and support provided by the University.
  • Attending staff/student committees, school/faculty away-days to promote the range of opportunities available to students to develop their skills and employability
  • Promoting the benefits of using the Leeds for Life website to help staff and students have more effective personal tutorials, and as a means of finding, recording and reflecting on opportunities for personal development
  • Attending LUU school representative committee and employability training to update them on the work of Student Opportunity
  • Training students and staff to use the Leeds for Life website
  • Working with the Student Opportunity teamto inform the development of the opportunities it provides to students
  • Helping to evaluate the success of student opportunities through focus groups and other activities
  • Working with a network of ambassadors within schools
  • Providing a case study on your internship experience for use on the Leeds for Life website

Person Specification

  • Current undergraduate or postgraduate student registered at the University of Leeds for academic year 2015/16
  • Clear commitment to the benefits provided by co-curricular activities
  • Excellent organisational skills, with strong overall administrative capability
  • A confident and clear communicator, with excellent presentation and written communication skills
  • Enthusiasm and a pro-active approach to making things happen
  • An ability to work with people at all levels of the organisation
  • Creativity, and an interest in marketing and a creative approaches to problem solving would be beneficial
  • An understanding of, and a commitment to, team working

Application is by CV and covering letter, and should include a summary of relevant experience and a statement of your suitability for the internship. Interviews will be held and short-listed applicants will be required to give a presentation on a specified topic.
