1.  Position overview

Responsible for delivery of approved training programs within the AHC10 Agriculture, Horticulture and Conservation and Land Management training package, including:

Teaching, management and facilitation of culturally appropriate training and learning activities;

Student assessments, maintenance of student records, supervision of students, and monitoring student progression;

Liaison with students and industry partners;

Participation in activities and requirements of the Directorate of Further Education: Workforce Development;

Development of appropriate teaching resources and assessment materials;

Monitoring of student learning outcomes in accordance with the guidelines of Batchelor Institute, the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) and the Australian Skills Core Framework (ASCF).

2.  Detailed statement of duties

1. Delivery of Conservation and land management and Horticulture training courses at remote Indigenous Communities, on campus, and in schools. This includes: work preparation, lectures, tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, work experience and student field excursions, in styles appropriate to the client group.

2. Prepare application and enrolments forms, training schedules and plans, and associated resources required for the effective and efficient delivery of courses within the Agriculture, Horticulture and Conservation and Land Management training package.

3. Develop training and assessment materials that meet quality assurance requirements, incorporate relevant industry practice and respond to clients learning needs including workplace English language, literacy and numeracy requirements.

4. Participate in flexible course delivery strategies, including co-delivery with foundational skills courses, and workplace assessment models.

5. Maintain student and apprentice records as required, result students according to defined timelines, report progression of students, consult and counsel students on their academic progress and recommend appropriate action as required.

6. Undertake the administrative tasks required in relation to course development and delivery within expected timeframes and attend Institute and team/department meetings as required.

7. Document assessments and advise students on student competency according to the Institute’s Academic Rules and ASQA Standards.

8. Identify and/or participate in fee-based course delivery activities.

9. Undertake and maintain personal professional development and currency in industry skills.

10. Undertake the administrative tasks routinely required of a Lecturer Academic B in relation to course planning, delivery and assessment.

11. Participate in research and/ or fee-based activities.

12. Other duties within the range of skills normally associated with this designation as directed.

3.  Essential selection criteria

1. A Vocational education and training (VET)qualification at Certificate III, IV or Diploma level that is relevant to Agriculture, Horticulture, or Conservation and land management, and a minimum of four (4) year’s work experience with a range of current skills and licenses’ relevant to this industry sector.

2. Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40110), including the unit TAELLN411, and a current Working with Children Clearance Notice (NT Ochre Card).

3. Eligible for registration in a professional organisation within the fields of Conservation and land management and/ or Horticulture as appropriate.

4. Significant relevant experience within Indigenous Australian Communities and/ or Organisations.

5. Demonstrated capacity to work effectively within the social, political and cultural environments of indigenous Australian communities and organisations and to communicate sensitively and effectively with indigenous Australians, including adult students and community members.

6. Proven capacity to work effectively with others in a culturally diverse team, as well as being able to operate independently of direct supervision.

7. Demonstrated capacity to undertake course/unit coordination and teaching with limited resources at a community level and to initiate and develop culturally appropriate curriculum teaching resources in Conservation and Land Management, and evaluate their effectiveness.

8. Computer skills to the level to support operating in this position.

9. Demonstrated capacity to undertake research and other professional development activities.

10. Demonstrated capacity to respond effectively to the learning needs of adult indigenous Australian students enrolled in Conservation and Land Management and/or Horticulture courses, with good organisational and time management skills to undertake a range of administrative, supervisory and liaison tasks including use of computer technology and electronic communications.

11. Must be able to undertake travel throughout the Northern Territory in light aircraft, boats and 4X4WD vehicles. Must possess a Northern Territory C class drivers licence with experience of driving on unformed roads, and must be prepared to stay in a range of accommodation available to Batchelor Institute staff, including camping out.

4. Desirable selection criteria

1. Qualifications in: English as a second language and/ or, adult education.

2. Ability to speak an Indigenous language.

3. Demonstrated experience in the use of equipment and machinery regularly utilized in the industry for example chainsaws, chemical application equipment, fire-fighting equipment, power tools, machinery, GPS units etc.

Copies of qualifications and evidence of experience MUST be submitted to Batchelor Institute HR and Senior Lecturer Conservation and Horticulture on request.

A Staffing Matrix MUST be completed and submitted to Batchelor Institute Quality Assurance Department and Senior Lecturer Conservation and Horticulture by the successful applicant prior to offer of a contract and commencement of duties.
