LS 19: Ireland, 1603-1800 (Dr Kevin McKenny)
The aim of this course is that at the end of it you will understand the processes which shaped Irish society between 1600 and 1800. A lesser objective is that you will know about the principle political, religious, economic and social developments over the period. Reading general surveys will not be adequate for this course. These are intended to give you an overview only. For individual topics and lectures a range of reading materials will be provided in a lecture by lecture reading list.
In the main classes will consist of a lecture, documentary movie and class discussion.
Assessmentprocedure(1) Two hour examination paper50%
(2) Project or essay (c. 3,000 words) on some aspect of the course approved by lecturer 50%

The flight of the earls and Plantation and Colonisation An examination of the main themes and interpretations of the flight and plantation and colonisation in Ireland, 1603-1640
Lecture 3Wednesday 2nd February
Plantation and Colonisation An examination of the theory and practice of plantation in Ireland, 1603-1640. The British presence in Wentworth’s Ireland.The Irish responses to Wentworth’s policies.

An examination of the major sources for the history of 17th and 18th century Ireland
Lecture 5Wednesday 16th February
The Insurrection of 1641. An examination of the main causes and interpretations of the 1641 insurrection.
Lecture 6Wednesday 23rd February
The 1641-1652 War in Ireland and an examination of the interpretations and historiography of Cromwellian Ireland.
Lecture 7Wednesday 2nd March
The Cromwellian confiscations and Restoration land settlement. A study of the impact of the 17th century land settlement in Ireland.

War and Peace; The Glorious Revolution in Ireland, 1688-1714.

Conclusion. A look back at the important themes of the course. (A course evaluation form will also be completed by each student).
