Lebanon

Lebanon has supported President Assad’s government through its actions in the United Nations and the Arab League; however, the prolonged nature of the Syrian civil war has begun to cause turmoil in Lebanon.

In August 2011, Lebanon was the only United Nations Security Council member to not condemn or criticize the Syrian government over the violence. In addition, in November 2011, Lebanon along with Yemen voted against the Arab League’s decision to suspend Syria’s membership.

Hezbollah, a Shia Islamic militant group and political party, has long influenced Lebanon politically with support from Iran and Syria. As a result, Hezbollah and the Lebanese government have stuck by Assad through the civil war. Hezbollah blames the United States and Israel for acting upon their own interests instead of the interests of Syrians, and commends the Syrian people for supporting the Assad government.
