  1. Linked Courses - Curricular coherence (interdisciplinary where appropriate) and integrating skill and content teaching
  2. Coordinated Classes (team taught) - 2 to 3 courses which focus on a specific theme
  3. Cluster/Block - courses are arranged in a block schedule with instructional time divided among faulty based on content that needs to be covered. For example, MW & TTH classes pair so course content is distributed along a 4 day schedule versus 2 and 2.
  4. Cohort groups – i.e. Woman Support Group, nursing students, science students, freshmen, etc.
  5. ESL/GED/ABE - creating a link between adult education content and developmental courses
  6. Student Success ( i.e. at-risk students) - creating intention links between course and Intro to College course(s)
  7. Academic Support – i.e. developmental courses linked with a credit level course

LEARNING COMMUNITY (LC) PROPOSAL TIMELINE

Initiation

Deans disseminate a Call for Proposals and include the Learning Community Proposal Worksheet to all faculty.

Learning Community Coordinating Team (LCCT) hosts a Brown Bag where all interested parties gather to brainstorm ideas about possible linked courses. Ideas and/or themes emerge.

Learning Community Committee Team recruits any additional needed faculty for linked courses.

Application

Faculty involved in a potential learning community jointly submit the Learning Community Proposal Worksheet to their department Chair(s) or Coordinator(s). Department Chair(s) and/or Coordinator(s) will forward worksheet on to the respective Dean(s) for signature.

Selection

Deans will review respective proposals and forward their recommendations to the Vice-President of Academic Affairs.

V.P. A.A. will review recommended proposals and forward approved LCs to back to the Dean(s) and the Learning Community Coordinating Team.

Development

Faculty involved in learning community courses will spend one semester developing their learning community prior to its implementation. During this time, LC faculty will focus on developing linked outcomes, activities, and formative/summative assessments.

Implementation

Developed course will be implemented.

Assessment

Evaluate effectiveness of implemented LC courses.

Timeline for Fall Implementation

Fall (one year prior to implementation):

Week 1Deans send out Call for Proposals & the Learning Community Proposal Worksheet form.

Weeks 2 & 3Brown bag

Weeks 4 - 6Active faculty recruitment. LCCT will consult with Deans/Chairs/Coordinators to keep them abreast of proposals put forward.

Weeks 7 - 9Faculty develop proposal in conjunction with faculty instructional designer & LCCT.

Week 10Proposals due to department Chair(s)/Coordinator(s) and forwarded to appropriate Dean’s Office.

Week 11Approved LCs forwarded to V.P.A.A.

Week 12Deans/Chairs/Coordinators are notified of approved LCs. Scheduling details will be submitted to Deans.

Weeks 13-16Begin marketing development.

Spring:

Weeks 1-4LCCT hosts mini-workshops on developing LC courses.

Weeks 5-9Faculty develop their linked courses in conjunction with faculty instructional designer & LCCT. Develop marketing plan.

Week 10All participants of the mini-workshops reconvene to discuss progress of LC course development. Implement marketing plan.

Weeks 11-13Faculty continue with development of LC courses.

Weeks 14-16Redistribute marketing material.

Fall:
