Salli’s Happy Hearts
Hello and welcome back to a new term. Children have gone back to school so no doubt some of you will be taking a well-earned holiday after being on ‘Grandparent duties’ for the last 6 weeks, and well done all of you who have, I hope you are appreciated !!
If you regularly tune it to the BHF web site you may have seen that the Happy Hearts nomination, which we received in the spring, was there in print for all to see. Check out the latest BHF on line newsletter
I recently sat my re validation for my BACPR certificate which was slightly different this time round as it was all done on line. You know me well enough to know that the internet and computer skills is not my forte and I am easily distracted and don’t like sitting down in one spot for too long. However I tried my best and focused for a whole 1 ½ hours and I am sure you will be pleased to know that I passed with 93% I must admit I did miss my little trips, as in previous years, to London to sit the exam as I very much enjoyed the traditional glass of wine(but of course a bottle works out more economical) and olives treat after!
Happy Hearts classes are all going well and will be returning, as the previous time table, from the 7th September with the exception of our new class; we will now be in Codford Village Hall on Wednesday evenings from 6.00-7.00pm this is a fabulous hall with ample free parking.
It is fantastic that more than 70% of you now are doing 2 (or in some cases 3) classes a week so check out the membership rates on offer for this term even if you do only attend 1class per week you will still save some money.
Please, if you are not able to attend a class could you drop me an email or give me a quick call it would help with equipment organisation etc etc.
Events
Christmas parties were fab last year and we are planning two parties once again, one in Shaftesbury and one in Salisbury again the venues are most likely to be The Coppleridge Inn and St Elizabeth Hall. Likely dates although they are yet to be confirmed are Friday 11th Dec (Salisbury) Wednesday 16th (Shaftesbury)That’ll be the Day Christmas special is at the City Hall on Friday 18th December tickets are selling fast so if you would like to join us let Geoff or myself know by 25th September tickets are £25.00 per person but with a group booking of more than 10 and by pretending we are all seniors !! We can get this down to £23
Geoff has been to another consultation event with the BHF in London. A number of issues were discussed including what type of support the BHF should continue to give to people. After much discussion it was agreed the main support should be for the following:
Information (leaflets)
Peer Support (Support Groups)
Direct Professionals (Dedicated Cardiac Nurses)
Lobbying and Influencing Government (All Cardiac Issues). This included lobbying Government and Insurance companies over Travel Insurance for Cardiac Patients. We’ve all had enough of being ripped off. After being fixed we are probably fitter than most!!!
Also discussed was the BHF House of Care Framework which is part of the Coalition for Collaborative Care. This is made up of a growing number of partner organisations including MacMillan Cancer Care, Diabetes UK, BHF etc. Like us, our partners want to make person centred, collaborative care a reality by incorporating it into their lives and work. Basically, at the moment, there is little or no link between care for people who have more than one major condition.
Do you have side effects from the drugs you are taking? If so you can report it using the Yellow Card Scheme. This is vital in helping the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) monitor the safety of all healthcare products in the UK to ensure they are acceptably safe for patients and users. The Form can be obtained for your local Pharmacy or online at:
Don’t forget you are entitled to an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) screening once you pass 65. See your GP. It’s well worth having it done.
Last but not least September is the BHF Bag it Beat it month. Please take a bag from our Happy Heart classes, fill it with whatever you can and return it to class. We’ll make sure it gets to the BHF shops. Happy Hearts is trying to fill 200 bags
