General Dental Council s1

The Royal College of Radiologists

CANDIDATE BRIEF

Job title: Examinations Administrator

Responsible to: Examinations Manager

Permanent contract. Full time

Salary £31,393 pa and excellent benefits. 35 hour week.

The Job Context

The Examinations Administrator is a role within the RCR’s Examinations Team which sits in the Education Directorate – further information on the Directorate is provided below.

The College runs postgraduate medical FRCR examinations - over a number of sittings each year and in various locations, including overseas. In addition to organising and delivering examinations and the subsequent release of results, the office supports a large number of College examiners, provides detailed guidance to candidates and their trainers, manages a range of examination projects and compiles statistical information on examinations.

The Examinations Team currently comprises ten staff – the Examinations Manager, five administrators responsible for operations, two individuals responsible for examination content, a quality and standards officer and a project manager.

The Role

The Examinations Administrator role has day-to-day operational responsibility for the successful administration of the First Fellowship examinations (FRCR) in clinical radiology and clinical oncology. The role provides administrative support to the three examination committees for the First examination: the Anatomy Examination Committee and the Physics Examination Committee for radiology, and the First FRCR in Clinical Oncology’s Examination Board.

The First FRCR in Clinical Radiology examination comprises two modules: Anatomy and Physics. Physics is examined by a written multiple choice question (MCQ) paper. Anatomy is examined by an image viewing session delivered on individual workstations. Both modules are held three times each year in a number of venues, including overseas. The examination periods are usually in March, June and September. The First FRCR in Clinical Oncology is examined by a written MCQ paper in four modules. All modules are held twice a year – usually in March and September – again in a number of venues.

A key area of work that will impact on the post holder is the examinations automation project. This programme of work is led by a full-time Examinations Project Manager and, from spring 2018, will result in changes to the First FRCR in Clinical Radiology’s Anatomy module. It provides a platform to deliver examinations and capture candidate answers, plus affords the scope to deliver examinations in multiple locations. The post holder will be expected to support the project and facilitate a smooth transfer to new ways of working and delivering the Anatomy examination.

Due to candidate numbers, differing assessment formats and the timing of examinations, the workload of the office can be pressurised at times. A high level of cooperation and teamwork between staff members is necessary to fulfil its functions effectively and efficiently.

The Education Directorate

The Directorate is responsible for all aspects of the College’s work that relate to the training of clinical radiologists and clinical oncologists up to the point of entry to the specialist register as well as issues related to equivalence to training and the provision of continuing professional development post-registration. In addition to setting and running examinations this includes: servicing and advising the relevant policy-making boards and committees, quality assurance of training and provision of educational activities including e-learning.

Royal College of Radiologists (RCR)

The RCR is the UK professional, membership body responsible for the medical specialties of clinical radiology and clinical oncology with a total membership of over 10,000 worldwide. It leads, educates and supports doctors who are training and working in the two specialties. Further information about the College’s activities can be found at www.rcr.ac.uk.

The College is a registered charity, registration no 211540.
