ZTE Corporation was founded in 1985. ZTE is the world’s fifth-largest telecommunications equipment supplier and fourth-largest mobile phone vendor. ZTE serves over 500 operators, including 64 of the top 100 global carriers, in more than 160 countries. More than 50% of ZTE’s annual revenue comes from operations outside of China. According to Strategy Analytics, ZTE shipped 11.5 million smartphones in the second quarter 2013, a year-on-year increase of 79%, vaulting the company to the fourth-largest smartphone vendor globally with 5% market share.
Evolution into an Independent, Publicly-traded Company
ZTE is an entrepreneurial success story. ZTE was the first telecom equipment company formed in the Special Economic Zone in Shenzhen as China’s first experiment with free market enterprises – the first opportunity for true entrepreneurialism in China. ZTE is a publicly-traded company and was the first Chinese telecommunications company to be listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in 1997 and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2004.
Protecting Intellectual Property
ZTE is committed to protecting intellectual property. ZTE devotes 10% of annual revenues to R&D, and holds 8% of LTE essential patents. At the end of 2012, ZTE has filed applications for more than 11,000 Patent Cooperation Treaties, covering markets such as the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Germany. More than 60% of ZTE’s filings were related to new technologies such as 4G/LTE, cloud-computing, the Internet of Things, and smart devices. ZTE is one of the leading patent holders among vendors in the telecommunications industry internationally, having filed applications for 48,000 patents globally, with more than 13,000 patents granted. More than 90% of ZTE’s patents are invention-related, including a large number of basic patents covering international telecommunications technical standards and core patents covering essential telecommunications technologies.

Fastest-growing Smartphone Vendor in the U.S.

As of Q1 2013, ZTE USA has achieved a year-over-year growth rate of 85.7%,with most of that growth attributed to selling devices on prepaid carriers.

Since it began launching devices in the in the U.S. market, ZTE has successfully launched 74, 42 of these devices are currently available from carriers including ATT, Verizon, T-Mobile, Boost, MetroPCS, Cricket and Tracfone.

ZTE also accounts for 14% of the U.S. prepaid market and isthe third-largest provider in this category.For Q4 2013, including the announcement of the Grand S and nubia 5, ZTE expects to see 10 new handsets launched in the U.S. market.

Doing Business in the United States
ZTE sells a wide variety of mobile phones to consumers across the country in partnership with all of the major U.S. carriers including AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint, T-Mobile, Metro PCS, Cricket, US Cellular and Tracfone. ZTE has also partnered with some the largest U.S. technology companies including Qualcomm, Intel, Texas Instruments, Microsoft and Google.
