Preparing for your assessment

Before your start:

This assessment is about leading the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of a youth development project.

A project in this context is a small-scale project carried out under the professional supervision of a senior youth worker. For example, a small-scale project could be an issue-based workshop, a holiday programme, a youth week initiative or another project identified by young people, the community or your organisation.

You will be assessed by:

  • collecting and submitting a portfolio of evidence showing that you led the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of a youth development project.
  • giving an oral presentation to your assessor to support your portfolio of evidence.
  • getting your assessor to verify that you have completed these tasks with competence.

As you go:

You must complete the tasks in this assessment while carrying out the various responsibilities required to successfully lead a youth development project. These responsibilities will include leading:

  • project planning and development.
  • project implementation.
  • project evaluation.

To complete this assessment you will prepare a detailed presentation of your work.

Collect workplace evidence for this assessment as you lead and complete the project. This will generate the evidence that demonstrates you are able to lead youth developmentprojects.

This assessment must be completed in accordance with the principles of the Youth Development Strategy Aotearoa, the Treaty of Waitangi, relevant codes of ethics and your organisation’s policies and procedures.

Collect a portfolio of evidence

Collect and assemble evidence showing how you led the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of your youth development project.

Examples of evidence may include:

  • a copy of your job description and a summary of your role in the project.
  • a written summary of the need for the project.
  • documented aims and objectives of the project.
  • documented special needs of participants, staff or volunteers.
  • notes from meetings with workers and/or young people about their roles and responsibilities.
  • a copy of an information letter and health and consent forms.
  • approval from your line manager.
  • leadership and staffing ratios for the project.
  • media reports or social media updates relating to the project.
  • session plans and evaluation forms.
  • documented feedback, questionnaires, surveys or interviews with young people.
  • recordings of activities for the project, if appropriate and with consent – for example, photos or videos of events.
  • monthly reports, photographs or minutes of meetings.
  • a copy of a reflective journal or narrative of one or more conversations you had about the project.
  • attestation or verification forms.
  • any other relevant items of evidence.

Remember to follow your organisation’s guidelines for confidentiality.

You can use your portfolio of evidence to support your presentation. Read through the requirements for your presentation so you know what needs to be included in the evidence that you collect for your portfolio. Label the evidence with your name and number each page. Assemble your evidence in the order in which you refer to it in your presentation.

Verification

This assessment requires an appropriate supervisor to complete a verification form to verify that you have completed certain tasks. Your verifier needs to complete the verification form provided with this assessment.This will assist in guaranteeing the authenticity of your assessment.

Give an oral presentation

Prepare an oral presentation and present it to your assessor. You need to refer to your portfolio of evidence and show how you led the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of a youth development project.

You will be assessed on the content of your presentation and your portfolio of evidence. Ensure that your content covers all the points listed in Task One, Task Two and Task Three and in the presentation checklist provided in this assessment.

Other points to note

  • Your presentation may be done in any size, shape or form – for example, it could be a low-key discussion, a slide show, or be supported by posters, pamphlets, displays or diagrams.
  • You may use visual aids such as photos, graphics and images to support your presentation.
  • You may choose to use technology to give your presentation from a distance if this has been agreed with your assessor.
  • The assessor may ask you additional questions.
  • Complete the presentation checklist and provide it to your assessor before you begin your presentation.

Task 1: Planning and developing a youth development project

This task is about delivering a presentation on how you led the planning and development of a youth development project.

What you need to do

In your presentation you need to:

  • determine the scope of the project by identifying a concern, issue or need to be addressed.
  • identify and describe the theory or practice model you used to inform your project.
  • describe the essential factors needed to implement the project, which must include the needs, aims and objectives of the project.
  • describe your implementation and evaluation plan.
  • show that your planning is consistent with relevant criteria, and your organisations policies and procedures, for example:

–the use of available resources to achieve objectives.

–responsibilities and accountabilities of people who will be involved in implementing the plan.

–things that may go wrong.

–procedures to deal with unplanned events.

–methods for evaluating progress towards achieving the objectives.

–characteristics and needs of youth.

  • show that your planning is in accordance with your role and function.
  • obtain confirmation from a senior youth worker or other authorised person that the plan is ready for implementation

Task 2: Implementing a youth development project

For this task you need to show how you led theimplementation of ayouth development project.

What you need to do

In your presentation you need to:

  • describe your role and function in the implementation process, and how you ensured you carried this out the project according to the plan.
  • identify any unplanned events or problems that occurred during the project, and show how you responded to these. Your response needs to be in line with your responsibilities within the plan.
  • describe how the theory or practice model you selected for your project was applied during the implementation of the project.

Task 3: Evaluating a youth development project

This task requires you to show how you led the evaluation of a youth development project.

What you need to do

In your presentation you need to:

  • include an evaluation ofhow successful your project was in terms of the outcomes meeting its aims and objectives.

You need to get feedback from stakeholders to ensure their needs have been addressed. Stakeholders may include but are not limited to:

  • youth.
  • parents.
  • caregivers.
  • youth leaders.
  • youth workers.
  • funding agencies.
  • community groups.

You must include this feedback with your evidence.
