Leadership,Dreams and Playing With All Your Heart

“You’re focused on tomorrow. You’ve got plenty of time for tomorrow. But these tonights….they’re going by fast…You focus on tonight. This is about you guys…this is about the guys in this roomthatcare about each other, that know there are only so many nights left…this is about you…” Kenny Chesney

If you have ever been part of a team whether in sports, theater, music, arts, science, debate, a division executive, or just the old neighbourhood gang hanging at the corner you know what it means to play with all your heart. Nothing else matters.

It’s the way you should feel about your role as a leader however large or small that role may be.

Like itor not, Leadershipis about you. It’s about who you are and what you do today, not tomorrow or who you were yesterday. What if this was your last opportunity to lead. How do you want to be remembered? .

Every so often I find myself reminiscing about days gone by.Not because I long for them but because they are full of fond and some not so fond memories. The fond-ones outnumber the not-so-fonds.I remember the passion I felt when I played my last varsity basketball game and afterwards sat in the dressing room, realizing it was over, with tears streaming down my face. I can remember the silence in that dressing room as we all realized that life had suddenly moved on and we hadn’t been given any warning.

Today I see that same passion in my fellow colleagues of the Leadership Executive. I wish you could be there to hear them talk and discuss the issues during our monthly teleconferences that we are all concerned about. Like teammates do,“they have your number, they have your back.” They play with all their hearts. You should too.

I saw that same passion this week in the 2nd year PT students in Darryl Yardley’s and Jim Millard’s business course at Western. They were giving final presentations framed around innovations for our profession. Without exception they were chock full of energy, new ideas and enthusiasm. Had you been watching the students, you would realize the studentsbelieve and behave that all things are possible. They dream big. You should too.

Those of us currently on the executive of the Leadership Division remind you that whatever your position today, be it, student, PTA, solo practice provider, large hospital practice leader, manager, director, long term care independent contractor, school healthPT, university department head or faculty member, administrator or PT in a provider agency…have fun, dream big and be a leader with all your heart or as the coach in this8 minute video says, “get your asses ready to play…win on three.”

“Leadership, like football, doesn't care who has the best grades. The only thing the field knows is how much heart you have. Play with all your heart.” Shay Mosby

From the practice fields…
