Layered Curriculum

Layered Curriculum is DUE Friday, November 13th, 2015

C Layer

Directions: Choose (1) activity from each of the following (4) categories. Each activity is worth up to 15 points. To earn full credit, work must show effort, creativity and thoughtfulness. You may not proceed to the (B) level until you have earned at least 60 points from the (C) Layer. It is your responsibility to keep track of this paperwork. If you lose this, you will have to start over, or go to my website and print out an extra copy, as I will not provide extra copies.

Category One: Characterization (choose one)

_____/15 1. Name the qualities that the Chief Elder saw in Jonas that qualified him to become the Receiver. Choose one of these qualities and identify an instance in which Jonas showed he possessed the quality. Cite the page number where you found this.

_____/15 2. Write a (2) pagepoem about what life is like in a Dystopia.

_____/15 3. Create a puppet or doll of a character from the book. Use materials you find around the house, or recycle old materials.

Category Two: Author’s Intent (choose one)

_____/15 1. Compare and contrast the different meanings of “giver” and “receiver” using a graphic organizer. Come up with at least (5) similarities and (5) differences.

_____/15 2. Write a (2) page poem about what life is like in a Utopia.

_____/15 3. Choose (25) interesting or unfamiliar words from the book. Make flashcards with the word on one side and the definition on the other. Include the page number that you found the word on.

Category Three: Community (choose one)

_____/15 1. Pretend you are a reporter for the community and your job is to gather facts and report news as it happens.Write a (2) Page report on everything you see happening in Jonas’ community.

_____/15 2. Research and write a (2) page report on the history of the bicycle to learn who invented it, where and when it was invented, and some of the different types of bicycles. Must be in final draft form.

_____/15 3. Pretend you just received your “assignment.” Make a list of rules that you might receive for your assignment. Jonas’ list is on page 68 of the novel. Your list must contain at least (10) rules.

Category Four: Artistic Renditions (choose one)

_____/15 1.Make a tape or audio recording of you reading aloud one entire chapter of “The Giver.”

_____/15 2. Create a diorama of the community or of the Givers dwellings. You may use shoe boxes or similar things as your background. Include things from their environment like trees, buildings, bicycles etc. (remember the items NOT included in their Utopia – if you include any, you will be deducted points)

_____/15 3. Make an illustration to go with the book. Use paint, markers, colored pencils, pictures from magazines, or anything else you’d like.

B Layer

Directions: Choose (2) of the following activities. Each activity is worth up to 20 points. To receive full credit, work must show

effort, thoughtfulness, and creativity. You may not proceed to the advanced level until you have earned at least 40 points. It is your

responsibility to keep track of this paperwork. If you lose this, you will have to start over.

_____/20 1. Create a new character for the novel, or drastically modify or delete a current character. Defend your decision regarding why you chose the change. Final draft, essay format, 2 page minimum.

_____/20 2. Illustrate your understandings of the dynamics between two characters with a comic strip. Depict a make believe scenario (not one found in the book) that shows the characters acting according to how they are characterized in the novel. Minimum of (5) comic strip boxes.

_____/20 3. Create a travel brochure, highlighting points in Jonas’ community that all visitors who enter their society must visit. ______/20 4. Discuss whether Jonas' assignment as the next Receiver of Memory is an honor or punishment. Use specific examples from the novel. Final draft, essay format, 2 page minimum.

______/20 5. Create a produce for a character in “The Giver” to advertise. Use one of the three persuasive techniques and have your character advertise/promote your product. How will they advertise this product in a Utopia? Be specific.

_____/20 6. Design and construct a new and different book cover for the novel. Must include a front picture and a 2 paragraph book review on the back.

_____/20 7. Jonas’ community does not have any rain. Make a terrarium to show how plants can grow in an environment that has no rain. See your science teacher for ideas.

A Layer

Directions: Choose (2) of the following activities. Each activity is worth up to 40 points. To earn full credit, work must show

effort, creativity, and thoughtfulness. It is your responsibility to keep track of thispaperwork. If you lose this, you will have to start

over.

_____/40 1. Write your own ending to the novel. It must be descriptive, clear, and complete Include dialogue (the talking between characters) in correct dialogue form. Thenanswer the following: Do you like your ending better or the book’s original ending? Why?

_____/40 2. Some people think The Giver is not suitable for young people to read because of some of the things the book deals with. What might make them feel this way? List at least three reasons why you think the book is good for students to read. Be specific and use examples from the book including the page number it’s on. Final draft, essay format, 3 page minimum.

_____/40 3.Define ANY (50) Words from the word bank listed below on a note card. On one side write the term and on the other side write the definition for the term. Also, include one synonym and one antonym for the term.

_____/40 4. How can Jonas' community be compared with Hitler's Nazi Germany? Be specific and use examples from the book including the page number it’s on. Final draft, essay format, 3 page minimum. Ask your Social Studies teacher for assistance.

_____/40 5. Create(5)math equations that relate directly to something in “The Giver.”Your equation needs to reflect or express something specific as it relates to the novel. After you have created your math equation, explain how and why it relates to the novel. Ask your Math teacher for assistance.

_____/40 6. Interview one of your principals, librarian, or any other teacher in the school that is not one of your normal teachers. You must ask these (4) REQUIRED questions. However, you MUST ALSO CREATE (6) MORE questions to ask them. Ask them:
