Theme of the Workshop

International investment constitutes a lifeline for several developing countries. While governments scramble to enact policies and incentives to attract the interest of foreign investors, the consequences and indirect impact of foreign investment are often ignored. The question of balancing local interests and the interests of foreign investors raises some interesting academic issues. With the Asian countries witnessing greater regional integration and with other transnational trade and investment endeavours (such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership), the question for developing countries policymakers is how to construct a foreign investment regime that attracts foreign investors yet does not compromise on local socio-economic interests. The postgraduate workshop is designed to encourage research students enrolled in Higher Degree Research programmes (in Australia as well as other countries) to come together to share their research and share perspectives on legal and economic issues pertaining to international investment regulation.
