LARC Policies & Procedures: Neurobehavioral Core for Rehabilitation Research (NCRR)

Personnel Access:

To access the NCRR at PSB, personnel must meet all the requirements to gain access to PSB as well as the requirements specific to the NCRR.

Complete procedures for gaining access to PSB may be found at:

Briefly, the requirements are:

  • Be on an IACUC-approved protocol and complete all training required by the protocol.
  • Complete the online training for PSB and the facility orientation. These trainings are available on research online:
  • Have a UCSF proxy card activated

For access specifically to the NCRR:

  • The IACUC protocol will be modified to include the testing to be conducted in the NCRR.
  • Investigators will be trained and registered by NCRR staff.
  • All research personnel will read, understand and agree to abide by all rules and regulations contained in this guidance document before they will be allowed access to the NCRR. The final page of this document must be returned to the NCRR staff.
  • Persons who have been in any rodent room under pathogen quarantine, “conventional” or otherwise “non-barrier” rodent facilities may not enter the NCRR on the same day unless they
  • shower (including washing hair) and
  • completely change outer clothing.

Animal Access:

To access the NCRR at PSB, rodents must meet all the requirements for eligibility to enter the PSB barrier. These requirements can be found at

Briefly, the requirements are:

  • Animals eligible for entry:
  • Newly purchased animals from approved vendors
  • Animals from other UCSF barrier facilities
  • Animals excluded from entry to the NCRR at PSB:
  • Animals from UCSF colonies under provisional quarantine or pathogen quarantine
  • Animals from non-approved rodent vendors
  • Animals for which health records are incomplete or missing
  • Animals from institutions or vendors with current infections or with a history of recurrent or uncontrolled infections
  • Animals which cannot undergo a period of incoming rodent quarantine

Housing Policies & Procedures:

  • Housing will be available for animals while under study in the NCRR.
  • There is NO BREEDING allowed in the NCRR-specified housing.
  • Because the NCRR and its housing will be a shared-use facility it is critical that all users adhere strictly to all barrier procedures (micro-isolator handling, proper use of changing stations, decontamination of spaces, etc).
  • The NCRR-specified housing for animals being studied in the NCRR will be monitored with sentinel animals.
  • For this reason, investigators should not move animals between racks.
  • Requests to move animals currently housed in PSB to NCRR-specified housing will be filed with LARC staff (currently Margaret Pasternak), who will complete the transfer.
  • Requests to move animals from UCSF barrier facilities other than PSB to the NCRR will be submitted to the LARC business office.
  • The investigator must obtain, complete and submit the “Barrier to Barrier Transfer” form from the LARC website.
  • Mice currently housed in PSB do not have to be housed in NCRR specified housing while under study. The clean elevators in PSB may be used for transport between NCRR and other barrier facilities in PSB. However, animals which will be trained daily for long periods of time, must stay in the NCRR-specified housing.

Anyone using the NCRR at PSB must abide by all other policies and procedures in place for the facility.Violation of the policies and procedures outlined in this document will be reported to the IACUC and may result in restriction of access to the NCRR.
