Yearbook 2015-2016 Syllabus

Description of Course

This course is designed for students who have successfully completed Journalism I or English class with staff recommendation and are interested in collaborating on the yearbook.

Students will:

  • analyze and consume media.
  • develop their own questions and angles for stories.
  • determine and interview credible and diverse sources.
  • draft and revise exceptional pieces of writing.
  • take, edit, and organize quality digital photographs.
  • design layouts for our yearbook.
  • market our yearbook and advertisements.
  • assist in managing our yearbook budget.
  • follow journalistic ethics.

Expectations

Students will be expected to actively participate in the yearbook process. Students grades will be based on meeting deadlines and producing quality work. Late assignments cost the yearbook money, and they will reflect on your grade.

Unlike many other courses at Lanier, yearbook is taught under the direct guided practice model. Ms. Eike will act as an adviser that will teach skills and concepts, but will allow students to dictate the activities in correlation with what needs to be done for the book. Because this is student driven, our class might appear to be less structured than other classes. With this in mind, it is expected that each student will bring class work or reading material should there be additional time in class.

In addition, students that do not participate actively in class, do not care for equipment, falsify information, or behave in any way that goes against the school code will be dismissed from the class and subject to punishment. Yearbook is a privilege and an elective, and we must hold ourselves to a high level of accountability.

While Ms. Eike understands that students have academic, extracurricular, and family obligations, it is still expected that all students attend events to take photos as needed. There are many events at our school that happen before, during, and after school, and we will divide these up so that all students have an opportunity to take photos and cover events. Participation in taking photos at school events is volunteer-based.

Photography and computer equipment is very expensive and must be cared for with the utmost respect. There is no food or drink in our work area. Students will be held responsible for any damage or loss of equipment that occurs due to misuse.

Other rules:

  • Electronic devices may be used appropriately at certain times.
  • No food or drinks
  • Respect one another
  • Behave respectfully at any time you are representing the yearbook or school.
  • Remember that you represent the entire school when on staff. Act accordingly.

Grades

Grades will be based on:

  • meeting deadlines
  • attempts at selling and marketing ads and books
  • written work
  • design work
  • photographic work
  • editorial work
  • accepting and using feedback
  • communication with staff and interview subjects
  • Spelling and common word error quizzes
