Lanercost CE Primary School
Number 8 April – 2016
Dear Parents,
Welcome to the start of the summer term and all that it brings. There will be a mixture of events this term: the statutory End of Key Stage Assessments; Year 2 and 6 (Standard Attainment Tests) and Year 1 Phonics Check; sporting competitions; a residential and topic related trips. Needless to say the next fourteen weeks will fly by.
Welcome:
I would like to welcome new Nursery starter, Evie. We are looking forward to working with her and her family over the coming years.
Interviews:
Over the next few weeks we will be interviewing candidates for the positions of EYFS, Year 1 and Year 4, 5 and 6 teachers. We will be involving the School Council in the process and getting their feedback on what they like about each of the candidates. As soon as these appointments have been made we will let you know who has been successful. We plan to arrange an induction process before the end of the term so that the start of the Autumn term runs smoothly.
Congratulations:
Well done to the Key Steps 2 team; Fern, Hannah N., Lucy, Rose and Isabelle who came second in the Key Steps County Final, this is a fantastic achievement. Their result contributed to Carlisle coming second overall out of the six districts.
Ready Steady Cook – What do we need for a healthy lifestyle? Topic:
This term we will be doing a topic on food: healthy eating and bodies within science; designing and preparing courses for a meal to be eaten at the Capernaum; writing to Mary Berry; cooking cakes for the Queen’s 90th birthday celebration; finding out about where food comes from (air miles); growing seasonal vegetables and fruits within our own school garden and having an end of term café as well as a whole school trip to Tesco (Farm to Fork) and a trip for Class 1 to Pizza Express.
The Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebration - Monday 13th June, 1.30pm at the Priory
Please can your child/children design and make either a cake/cupcakes for the celebration of the Queen’s 90th Birthday celebration on Monday 13th June (one per family). Prizes will be awarded for the most innovative design per year group. We plan to have a short service in the Priory to celebrate the Queen’s life to which parents are invited followed by an afternoon tea to which we will be inviting members of the community. FOLS have very generously bought each child a commemorative medal as a gift, which will be presented during the afternoon.
Ready Steady Cook Winners Restaurant Nights - Monday 27th June and Monday 11th July
Children in Class 2 and 3 will be asked to design either a starter, main course or dessert as part of our Ready Steady Cook topic. This will form their half term holiday homework. There will be set parameters such as: how much the food is allowed to cost; where the ingredients are sourced from and how many air miles it would take to make the meal. Your child/children will be expected to cook the dish, photograph it, and be prepared to talk about what they have done. Mr and Mrs Runton are going to judge the entries; the best six starters, mains and desserts will be selected and these children will get the chance to cook their dishes on one of the restaurant nights. Parents will be invited to come and enjoy the evening at a cost of either £10 for two or £15 for three courses. Half of the profits will go towards the school funds. At the end of this letter we would like you to indicate whether you might be interested in attending one of the nights at the restaurant. As it is a school night the event will be held at 5.30pm until 7pm. We are aware that not all children will be competition winners but hope that they will enjoy taking part and learning how to cook something special and be proud that their recipe will be published in a cook book for parents to buy (for approximately £4).

Woodland Schools:
We are extremely pleased that we have our Woodland Schools up and running again for the summer term. This will take place on a Tuesday afternoon for children in Year 2 to Year 6. An email will be sent out each Monday reminding children to bring in their wellingtons and jogging bottoms for these sessions. Unfortunately, due to health and safety, any child who does not have their wellingtons/joggers will not be allowed to take part.
Bouldering at Eden Rock:
This term children in year 3- 6 will have the chance to learn how to boulder at Eden Rock. Our first session went really well; the children enjoyed wearing the climbing boots and chalking up their hands to solve the various problems.

Golden Time:
Please can I remind you that your child needs to have read on four different days at home and have their reading folder in school every day to earn their Golden Time. If anyone is able to help with Golden Time please can you let Mrs Reed know? You do not need a particular talent, you could build Lego models, play chess or board games or just play alongside the children, however, your support really does make a difference.
FOLS (Friends of Lanercost School):
A fantastic sum of £430 was raised at the Lanercost Cross Country; many thanks to everyone who made this possible. Once again the Easter Egg Hunt and Tea were a resounding success and much enjoyed by the children, parents and staff, thanks to everyone for their food and Easter egg contributions.
Boden Party – Saturday 7th May, 10 – 2pm at Brampton Golf Course:
Boden clothes are beautifully made and high quality; at this event you will be able to purchase them with a discount of 25%. Please come along and enjoy this event.
News from the Garden:
Golden Time in the school garden this term promises to be interesting and exciting! I hope the children will enjoy planting and harvesting not only vegetables and fruit for the school kitchen but also more unusual plants like Snake Gourds, Roman Giants and Naughty Mariettas!
With the children’s help we will plant a red, white and blue display for the Queen’s birthday celebration and try a new idea of a Good Manners tub- the better the manners, the more colourful the tub!
We will be looking out for interesting insects: beautiful butterflies; massive millipedes and wriggly worms in the garden with the school camera at the ready!
It seems that from the moment the children planted spring bulbs in the wellies back in November we’ve had almost continuous wind and rain. So I’m delighted that the bulbs have flowered into a colourful display.
I would be grateful if you could collect Houghton Hall garden vouchers and hand them in to the office, to Anna Brady or me. If we can collect 200 we can get £100 of gardening equipment. A mini poly tunnel would be really useful amongst other things.
Thank you, Elaine Nightingale
Clubs:
An email was sent out on Friday alerting parents to the clubs that will be running this term. If your child is interested in joining a club please can you ensure that they commit to the entire period; in the past we have had places taken up by children who then drop out, this is not fair on those children we have to turn down.

Sports Day – Tuesday 12th July 1.15 pm:
This year sports day will be on Tuesday 12th July at 1.15pm. As usual we would like to invite parents to come along to support their child/ren and enjoy a fun afternoon. The wet weather contingency day will be Thursday 14th July at 1.15pm; hopefully we will not have to use this second day. Please can I ask parents not to bring their dogs with them to this event; much as we love our four legged friends, if a child were to be bitten it would put the school in a very difficult position.
