Selection Policy

Selection Policy Procedure:

1.  Each grade is selected by the captain of the grade, the captain of the grade below and the Chairman of Selectors. The lowest grade will be picked by the captain of the grade and the Chairman of Selectors. The U24’s will be picked by the 1st grade and U24’s captains and the Chairman of Selectors.

2.  If a person occupies more than one role in a selection discussion, the captain of the highest grade not involved in selection will assume a role in the discussion.

3.  The management committee will provide the chairman of selectors with a list before each selection meeting of players unavailable for selection due to injury, suspension or non-payment of fees.

4.  Players must have paid their fees or come to an arrangement with the club treasurer in order to be considered for selection. Any player that has paid fees will be considered for selection above those who have not yet paid.

5.  All details of selection meetings must remain confidential. The captains and the Chairman of Selectors will not discuss any details of selections with any member of the Club before or after the selection meeting.

6.  Players will participate in the grade dictated by the selection committee.

7.  Players who are demoted are to be called by their previous captain as soon as possible after the selection meeting. Players are entitled to an explanation for their demotion, and this is the only exception to point 3. Any player who is dissatisfied with their selection and has a valid concern must contact the Chairman of Selectors.

8.  Captains are to contact all players in their respective teams by 8:00pm on the Thursday before the match. (Contact can be made in person or via a phone call. SMS or leaving a phone message is insufficient to confirm a player’s availability. The Chairman of Selectors will publish teams on the website 24hrs before the match.

9.  Captains are to submit their teams into mycricket at the latest by 7pm Friday evening.

10.  Selection meetings are to be held at a time suitable to all captains and the chairman of selectors, allowing sufficient time to fulfil the requirements of point 5. Any captain unable to attend the meeting can send a suitable representative. The representative needs to be approved by the Chairman of Selectors in order to ensure that all discussions remain confidential. No alcohol is to be consumed during a selection meeting. All captains must bring their score books with them so that accurate statistics are available.

11.  In order to serve the purpose of ensuring Epping’s competitiveness across all grades and thus challenge for the Club Championship, and considering the severely damaging effect player unavailability’s have on the strength of all grades, Epping Bulls Cricket Club will enforce the following selection policy:

Any player who makes them self unavailable for any regular season round, for any reason should not assume he will return in the grade that he was previously selected in.

The selection committee may, in certain circumstances, may make exceptions to this rule. The selection committee will take the following factors, and only these factors into account:

a) The amount of choice the player has in participating in the activity which renders them unavailable for that round;

b) The importance of that event/activity as determined by the selection committee. Clearly this is a subjective call, but players should be reminded that so too are any selection decisions made by the selection committee, and furthermore a degree of common sense will be employed by the selection committee: Immediate family members’ weddings and funerals, and genuine, unavoidable work commitments will be viewed as more important than holidays, junkets and friend’s weddings. These categories are not exhaustive and should be viewed as illustrative of the committee’s approach and not as categories of activities which are exceptions to the rule;

c) The amount of prior notice that the player gives the selection committee;

d)The regularity with which that player has made them self unavailable in their time with the club.

Further, it should be reiterated: If you miss a game; don't assume you will come back in the grade you were previously selected in. It is for you to justify to the selection committee why your circumstance is exceptional; it is not for the committee to have to justify their decision.

12.  If a player misses a further match through unavailability having already returned in a lower grade, the player shall not be forced to return in a lower grade again unless it is the judegement of the selection committee that his form warrants selection in that grade.

13.  Each grade’s captain is exempt from point 10.
