Kuuipo and Larry,

Just for the record, I too approve the removal of the Professional Certificate in Geographic Information Science from the General Catalog.

When Dawn Wright wrote the original proposals there were actually three proposals tied together: Undergraduate, Graduate, and Professional. It was a mistake to include the Professional Certificate. The Oregon State Board of Higher Education does not approve non-credentialed programs--but this is what happened. As far as I know, it is the only Professional Certificate ever approved by the Board. Since it is a non-credential program it is NOT transcript visible. There is no Banner code--at least there shouldn't be one. Thus, if a student listed the GIS Professional Certificate on their resume and an employer called to confirm its completion, the Registrar's Office would have no record of it. Professional Certificates are treated similar to 4-H programs, the Master Gardner program, and hundreds of other programs that OSU offers each year by dozens of colleges and departments.

I have listed the Professional Certificate in Geographic Information Science (removal from the General Catalog) with the following “termination” information:

Effective Term: Fall Term 2011

Approval Date: December 27, 2011.

Campus Announcement: None

Thanks,

Hi Larry,

Mahalo. I will work on the curriculum proposals.

Sadly I spell my name incorrectly without the glottal stop. So you may leave it as Kuuipo. :)

Aloha, Ku'uipo,

I deleted the text about a professional certificate from the page at There were only two major codes for the GIS certificate, one for the undergraduate (C540) and one for the graduate (CG03).

Any changes to academic program course lists need curriculum proposals, please. This maintains our records and notifies MyDegrees programmers of the changes.

If course titles/credits have changed, please just mark this on the catalog printouts you send me for your updates.

I've attached the standard directions for catalog updates.

BTW, do you want me to add the glottal stop to your name in the catalog, i.e. Ku'uipo ?

Mahalonuiloa.

Mahalo Larry!

Now that I have assumed GIScience program directorship, I owe you some updates to the OSU General Catalog 2012-2013. When are those updates due?

The changes I need to make:

1) I need to remove the mention of the professional certificate for the certificate in Geographic Information Science: It is no longer offered.

2) I need to update the list background and elective course for the undergraduate and graduate certificate:

3) I need to update the number of Required Core and Elective Credits for the undergraduate certificate:

For example, for the undergraduate certificate, GEO 465 used to be a 3 credit course, but now is a 4 credit course. Also, it needs to be moved from Required Core to Electives.

For 1) May I go through you?

For 2) and 3) should I go through the curriculum proposal via the system at

MeleKalikimaka,

Kuuipo
