Lance Corporal Jonathan W. Collins
Achievement Scholarship
This scholarship was established to honor the life of Jonathan W. Collins, a 2003 graduate of Crystal Lake South High School. Upon graduation Jonathan left for Marine Corp basic training. In February of 2004 Jonathan’s unit was sent to Ar Ramadi, Iraq. On August 8th, 2004 Jonathan was killed during combat operations.
Despite his short time in the Marine Corps, Jonathan exemplified the Marine Corps motto “Semper Fidelis” Latin for “Always Faithful.” Jonathan’s actions in Iraq provided a number of examples of him living the core values of the Marine Corp: Honor, Courage and Commitment.
As a student and athlete at CLS Jonathan began to exhibit the traits necessary to live the motto and core values of the Marine Corp. These traits were particularly evident on the soccer field, his work with Gator Pride and his acting in the school plays. Jonathan’s positive, fun and outgoing personality had a positive impact on those around him and contributed to his success as a son, brother, friend and Marine.
This scholarship will reward a student whose diverse involvement in Crystal Lake South and the community best exemplify the life Jonathan led at CLS and the Marine Corp core values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment.
To be considered for this award the student must:
- Complete the application form;
- Provide two recommendation letters, one from a teacher or administrator of CLS;
- An essay describing how your involvement at Crystal Lake South and the community has helped to put you on the path of meeting the Marine Corp core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment.
- GPA is not a consideration in this scholarship
This $1,000 scholarship is open to all students who plan on attending a 2-year, community or 4-year college or university. The scholarship is a one-time award and will be awarded on Honors Night.
The application, essay and recommendation letters should be returned to the guidance office. The deadline for completion is April 15th. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Jack or Angel Collins at 815.355.0108 or .
