Question

What is the % of Hispanic students on the LSCPA campus? Dr. Hebert stated information is being gathered and should be available in November.Dean Hebert mentioned that LSCPA falls into the Novice category, a designation given by the DOE.

Kara Smith mentioned using the Pearson Grit program as an assessment tool. She commented that it is similar to ACT Engage.

Discussion about how to gather information: a) Surveys to be issued to Hispanic students to find out what they feel can assist them to be successful – per Felicia. Eursula reminded everyone that Dr. Stretcher wants to ensure that other minority groups and non-traditional students are reached out to as well. Other comments include ensuring that we ask the right questions (e.g. Open-ended; closed responses and guided questions). b) Kara suggested that Focus groups may also provide a means to help students convey their needs.

Suggestions for involving the community included contacting organizations, churches and schools:

Partner with churches: ‘College Goal Sunday’ is popular in Louisiana. The institution invites parents and students to the campus on Sunday afternoons to provide them with information about the application process and what programs are offered.Reaching out to specific people, e.g. Pastor Adolph of Antioch M.B. Church in Beaumont

Partner with high schools: ‘Goals Night’,offered in BISD, colleges participate with surrounding High schools; parents meet teachers during the first six weeks of the school year. LSCPA could set up booths at this event.

Partner with Hispanic community organizations: LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens); Chapter here in P.A. and in Beaumont. Distribute Academic and Technical Program brochures.

Also, partnering with other agencies and resources such as:

Workforce Education (Danielle Grundy – contact) that offer programs such as ESL classes, developmental education, TSI Preparation, etc.

Texas Workforce provides financial assistance for low-income persons, single moms; to assist with books, uniforms (if needed), testing fees, etc.

Student Success Center – possibly we could check to see what types of services they provide and expand those for students

‘Early Alert System’ – Automated referral students for ‘at-risk’ students. Comments made by Felicia, Dean Trahan and Dean Hebert regarding funding and benefit and ease of notification this could provide if faculty has concerns regarding a student.
