Historically, Newburgh is rich in uniqueness with many preserved, post-Civil War buildings, several of which are on the National Register. The quaint river town of Newburgh is the largest city in WarrickCounty. Boonville is the county seat, and the place were young Abe Lincoln is believed to have studied the law. Legend says Lincoln came to Boonville to attend court and borrow law books. WarrickCounty began its climb to become the coal capital of Indiana in 1850 with the opening of the first mine, known as “Phelps Coal Bank,” near Newburgh. The CoalMiningMuseum at Lynnville preserves much of the history of coal mining in the area.
