Lake Hazel Middle School
Wrestling 2018
General Information
Welcome to the sport of wrestling; a rewarding, tough, disciplined sport that is a fight, with rules. To build strong bodies, wrestlers need to eat healthy food and get plenty of rest. The LHMS wrestling coaches strive to provide a quality program for all athletes involved. Team success depends greatly on how much each wrestler can learn and grow during the season. Practices will be fast paced and will stress the basics. Reaching team and personal goals is directly related to work ethic and commitment to improving. If you miss the techniques or methods covered during a single practice session, it is difficult to make it up.
Participation Fee: All students participating in athletics at any West Ada middle school are required to pay a participation fee as well as purchase an activity card. The fee to participate is $90 a sport, while the activity card is $21 +tax ($22.26). If you have already participated in a sport this year at Lake Hazel, you have already paid for your activity card so you only need to pay the $90 participation fee. This fee is due when you turn in your participation form and medical history. You will not be able to start practicing until this participation fee is paid. The participation form, medical history, and participation fees are due by October 12th. You can turn them into Mr. Levanger in room 512 or Coach Martin.
Attendance Policy: Athletes need to attend every practice. If a practice will be missed, a note from a parent/guardian or a doctor is required. It is encouraged to give the coaches a note before the scheduled practice is missed. The Idaho Activities Association policy is that each participant must have 10 practices before the first meet. Students must be in attendance at school the entire school day in order to participate in extra-curricular activities after school or in the evening of that same day.
Eligibility: Students participating in school activities/athletics must maintain passing grades in each of their classes to be eligible to participate in matches. Grade checks will be done on a weekly basis by the Athletic Director. Grade checks will begin after the activity start date. The following District guidelines will be followed for each student that is involved in a school activity and is failing a class:
- From the date of notification by the classroom teacher, the student will have one week to raise the failing grade to a “D” or show significant improvement.
- If the grade is not raised to a “D” or the student does not show significant improvement, the student will not be eligible to participate in the up coming week’s games/matches/meets/activities. The student will be required to practice and attend all contests/activities as a part of the team but will not participate in the event.
Transportation: Students who utilize school transportation to an activity must return to school on school provided transportation. Students may ride home with their parents provided a parent signs out the student with one of the coaches. If a student leaves without signing out, they will not be allowed to travel to future away matches.
Personal Health Care: Participation in wrestling can increase the student’s exposure to various skin infections. We would like to keep this risk as minimal as possible but we need parent help to make that happen. Here is a list of some very basic precautions:
- Assess skin regularly for any lesions. Refer athletes with wounds to appropriate health care personnel.
- Launder personal items, such as towels, and equipment frequently, ideally after each use. Do not share headgear or other equipment.
- Cuts or other abrasions on the skin should be washed with soap and water and covered with dry, sterile bandages.
- Keep all wounds covered. A clean dressing should be applied every day until healed.
- Wash hands frequently. Shower with soap and shampoo immediately following practices and matches.
Practices: The sport of wrestling requires a lot of set-up and take-down for each practice and home match. We realize that kids have homework and other obligations, but the equipment cannot be put away by only a few kids. At the end of each practice, mats will be put up by ALL athletes. Athletes should be finished and out in front of the building by 5:15 p.m. ready to be picked up. Practice runs from 3:30 to 5:10 p.m., Monday through Friday unless informed otherwise by the coaching staff. Each wrestler must be picked up by 5:30. A coach is required to stay on the property until ALL wrestlers have gone home. If you cannot have your child picked up by 5:30, you will need to make other arrangements.
Matches: Matches begin at 4:00 p.m. and conclude when the last match has finished. The number of athletes from the participating school and weight classes will determine who will receive matches. We will rotate wrestlers according to the number of matches available. The participating school may not have enough wrestlers in each weight class for everyone; however, at home matches, we will do our best to get every eligible athlete a match—even if that means wrestling another athlete from our own school. Wrestlers must stay in the stands in the designated area until it is their turn to wrestle. They may only leave the stands with the permission of a coach. Athletes will remain at the match until it is over—this means they will stay until the last scheduled match has finished at away matches or the equipment has been put away at home matches.
Wrestle-Offs: Frequently, we will have wrestle-offs in certain weight classes. As a rule, the winner of these wrestle-offs will be designated the Varsity wrestler for that weight class. The Varsity wrestler for each weight class will wrestle for team points in the matches. All other wrestlers will be designated as Junior Varsity or JV wrestlers. The coaches have the ultimate say as to who wrestles in a Varsity or JV spot in any match. Wrestlers may also be moved up a weight class if it is deemed necessary for the team. There will be a depth chart established at the beginning of the season to rank wrestlers in each weight class. In order to move up the depth chart, a wrestler must challenge and defeat the wrestler directly above them. A wrestler is awarded three challenges during the season in which they can challenge any wrestler in their weight, regardless of placement on the depth chart. If a challenger loses twice to the same opponent, the challenger will no longer be allowed to challenge that opponent.
Weight Classes: In pounds:70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100, 105, 110, 115,120, 126, 132, 138, 147, 160, 175, 190 and Heavyweight (275 max). Weigh-ins will be conducted the day before the match. If a student is absent the day of weigh-ins, they will not be allowed to wrestle at the match. Wrestlers not making weight will have to wrestle at the weight they make. Loss of the wrestler’s Varsity spot may be a result of not making weight. We do not condone starving, excessive dieting, or extreme measures to lose weight. Eating good foods in correct portions, staying hydrated, avoiding sugar and fried foods is the best way to maintain desired weight.
Thank you for helping us make this wrestling season a positive experience for everyone involved.
