Job Title: Safety Engineer

Department: Safety

Reports To: Safety Director

FLSA Status: Exempt

Summary:

Develops and implements corporate and site-specific safety programs to prevent and/or correct unsafe environmental working conditions. Evaluates safety program effectiveness, and makes recommendations to enhance safety progress effectiveness. Directly supervises employees with regards to safety regulations and requirements on site, in accordance Company’s safety policies and applicable OSHA and state regulations. Trains employees in the safe performance of their jobs. Plans, assigns responsibilities and manages site safety program. Appraises safety performance and rewards/disciplines accordingly. Addresses complaints and issues and resolves appropriately.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include… (other duties may be assigned):

Program Compliance & Education

• Interacts with Client to ensure compliance with contractual safety obligations and ROCIP.

·  Determines and enforces requirements for personal protective equipment and devices, and oversees and/or directs installation of safety devices on jobsite.

·  Works with Project Team and Safety Director to develop site-specific program at start-up; implements, and evaluates site safety programs and procedures to ensure personnel and project safety.

·  Conducts and coordinates safety and first aid/CPR training to educate workers about safety policies, laws, and practices.

·  Follows policies and procedures; completes administrative tasks correctly and on time; supports company’s core values.

Hazard Analysis & Prevention

·  Conducts hazard analyses throughout all phases of the project; partners with Project Team to develop Job Hazard Analyses (JHA’s) and monitor their effectiveness.

·  Inspects construction site, mechanized equipment, safety and fire equipment to ensure compliance with regulations and site requirements; identify and correct potential hazards.

• Evaluates human activities working with/around machinery/equipment to identify hazards.

• Uses experience and training with confined spaces to ensure safe work conditions, including performing air quality tests for presence of harmful gases or vapors.

Accident/Injury/Incident Reporting, Evaluation

• Immediately responds to, reports, investigates injuries/accidents/incidents for Safety Director, Project Team and others as directed (including generation and distribution of drafts and final reports. Coordinates emergency response as appropriate. Ensures corrective actions are taken to prevent recurrence.

·  Escorts employees needing medical attention to medical facilities; manages site return-to-work program, including monitoring recovery of injured employee, return-to-work status, follow-up visits, etc.

Education and/or Experience - Bachelor’s degree from four-year college/university PLUS minimum 5 years of directly related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations - CHST or CSP Certification REQUIRED.

Language & Communication - Able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Able to write routine reports and correspondence, clearly and grammatically. Able to create written safety policy and procedure manuals, and presentations (PowerPoint), and conduct presentations and speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.

Mathematical Skills - Able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; able to compute percentages, and draw and interpret graphs.

Reasoning - Able to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in standardized situations and in situations where limited standardization may exist. Able to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills - Knowledge of Internet software, spreadsheet software (Excel), word processing software (Word), and presentation software (PowerPoint).

Preferred Certifications: Traffic Control, HazMat Certification; Certified Trainer or Instructor in Flagging, Rigging, Excavation/Trenching, Scaffolding, Fall Protection, Confined Space, First Aid/CPR, Forklifts and Aerial Lifts, OSHA 500 / 501 – 10 and 30 Hour Outreach Instructor.
