Lab Safety & General Policy Rules: 1059 LeBaron (Textile Quality Assurance Lab) and adjacent rooms (1057 and 1065 LeBaron)

  • Machines and equipment are to be used by TC classes/students only.
  • No food or drink of any kind is allowedfrom the north edge of the hood south.
  • Smoking is not allowed in LeBaron Hall – including 1057, 1059, and 1065.

Return any item to its storage location (see the location sheet posted in the lab).

  • Wash all glassware before returning it to the appropriate shelf or drawer.
  • If something breaks or is not working correctly, notify your instructor immediately.
  • If you make a mess, clean it up. Everything should be in its place. Pick up loose yarn, fibers, detergent, etc. Close all doors and drawers. Keep lab benches clean.
  • Turn off machines and equipment when finished working.
  • Treat machines and equipment with respect. To avoid injuries, stay focused when using them.
  • Do not use equipment or machines if you are overly tired, taking medications that cause drowsiness, or have been consuming alcohol or other mind-altering chemicals.
  • Never operate the equipment while alone in the lab.
  • Keep all lab tables clear of book bags, coats, etc. Keep book bags and coats in 1057 LeBaron.
  • Throw away all tape when you are finished with it. Don't leave it on tables, benches, or windows.
  • Do not write on lab materials (books, papers, and test methods). Replace them where they belong.
  • Use the red Material Safety Data Sheets or the Lab Safety Notebook as needed.
  • All body jewelry (i.e., pierced navels, etc.) must be covered by at least one layer of clothing when working with any equipment, chemicals, or machines.
  • Place broken glassware in the broken glassware/sharps container in the hood.
  • Safety goggles are available and must be used when using chemicals. All chemicals must be used in the hood. Wear lab coats and gloves when handling chemicals. When pouring chemicals, hold the bottle with the label in the palm of your hand. Wipe drips off the container with a damp sponge.
  • Closed toe shoes (not sandals) should be worn whenever working with equipment or chemicals.
  • An emergency shower and eyewash is located next to the hood in 1059 LeBaron. An eyewash is located at the sink in 1065 LeBaron.
  • First Aid kits are on the shelf under the bulletin board by the door. These are “Good Samaritan” kits and do not contain blood exposure protection items. They are intended for self-use and for individuals who make a personal choice to volunteer assistance.
  • Report any accident to the instructor/supervisor present. Call 911 for emergency medical assistance.
  • Fire extinguishers are located near the hall door of 1059 LeBaron and the hall door of 1065 LeBaron. In case of fire, call 911 immediately regardless of the size of the fire.If the fire is small, attempt to extinguish with the fire extinguisher. If necessary, evacuate the building using the stairs. Do not use elevators.
  • Evacuation: At the sound of a fire alarm, or if you are instructed to evacuate, leave immediately. Use stairs at the north end of the hallway. Do not use the elevator. Go down one flight of steps, through the door and out the doors on your right. Proceed to a clearance area 150 ft. from the building.
  • Severe weather: Proceed to the lowest level of the building to an area away from glass. . Use stairs at the north end of the hallway. Go down two flight of steps and walk towards the center of the hallway.
