LAB # ____

“Title of the Lab”

Objective: In one or two complete sentences, give the reason for doing the experiment. State what you are trying to find out (the purpose).

Materials: Briefly, list the equipment and materials being used.

Procedure: Describe the steps followed during the experiment. Write simply and clearly so that someone not familiar with the experiment would be able to follow your “instructions.” Number each step. If this information is provided in a handout, just write, “Refer to Handout” after the header.

Data/Observations: Display data and/or observations in a neat table. Draw diagram(s) whenever helpful.

Calculations/Graphs: Show all calculations showing equations and substitution with units! Graphs must contain all parts listed in the class notes graphing procedure.

Discussion (Questions):

1.  Answer all questions in complete sentences (no b/c please).

***Don’t forget!***

2.  Include a final paragraph stating the possible sources of error that were part of the laboratory and your comments on how to improve the laboratory procedure

Conclusion: Here is where you tie your report together by linking the objective/purpose (hypothesis or claim) with the data you collected (evidence) and providing an explanation (interpretation) between the two. Examples are given on the reverse side of this page.

The Science Lab Conclusion (examples):

1.  CLAIM: State the connection between the data collected and the hypothesis or purpose of the lab.

Sentence stems should include:

“The hypothesis was/was not supported because…”

“The purpose states…and in this lab the data showed…”

2.  EVIDENCE: Provide specific data that supports the claim and explain how it supports the claim.

Sentence stems should include:

“One piece of evidence from the data that supports the claim is… This piece of evidence supported the claim because…”

“The independent and dependent variable showed a ______relationship.”

3.  INTERPRETATION: Connect a concept learned in class to the lab experience and make a connection to use beyond the classroom.

Sentence stems should include:

“The science concept associated with this lab is…”

Then continue to explain the concept using an example or definition.

REMEMBER…

Ø  Lab Reports must be typed, neat, organized, and easy to read.

Ø  Measurements taken during a lab are to be written on your Lab Data Sheet which is to be attached at the end of your submitted written report.

Ø  Lab handouts should be put in your Lab Section of your three-ring binder along with any other notes pertaining to laboratory work.

Ø  Reports will generally be due within one week after the lab is started in class. Dates will be posted.

Ø  Late labs will be penalized 10% for each week that it is late. After two weeks, minimum or no credit will be allowed.

Ø  Read graded lab reports carefully so that you can improve and learn from your mistakes. All reports will be collected the same day after review.
