Laboratory Investigation:
The jelly bean predicament
Fellow scientists, I came upon an assorted collection of jelly beans, in a variety of assorted colors and patterns. Though I was quite excited, I immediately noticed a problem. The different kinds of jelly beans were all mixed together in a large jar, and I do not know which color jelly bean is which flavor. Using the dichotomous key provided, you can sort out the different jelly beans, and identify the flavor of each.
Directions:
Using the dichotomous key provided, sort out the different kinds of jelly beans by observing the different colors and patterns and use the key to identify the flavor of each jelly bean. To determine the flavor, you must use the hint at the end of the key and write the chosen flavor in the blank. Good luck!
Procedure:
- One member of the group is to get 10 assorted jelly beans in a cup.
- Pick one bean to start with and list the numbers you will follow to identify the bean. You will always start at number 1.
- When you get to the hint for the flavor of the bean, write down what you think the flavor might be. DO NOT EAT THE BEAN.
- Repeat each step for each jelly bean until you are done. NOTE: there may be blanks left in your key when you are finished.
- When you are finished, STOP. Before you go on, you must call the teacher over to check your answers.
- Pick your favorite jelly bean and come up with a scientific name for it. Keep in mind: The name should be two words that sound Latin, written in italics, with the first name capitalized the second lowercase. On the top of the poster paper provided in this packet, write your scientific name for your bean.
- Draw your bean underneath the scientific name.Make sure the color of your drawn bean matches the actual color of the bean.Be creative and have fun!
