Lab #2 CSE 111 Spring 2001

DUE: February 6, in lecture

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUBMIT FOR THIS WEEK’S LAB (see directions for complete below, they include some modifications/changes to accommodate our computing environment):

COVER SHEET FOR LAB 2 with appropriate information filled in

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUBMIT FOR THIS WEEK’S LAB:

MODULE 2:

Lab 1: memo, resume (make it very simple!)

Lab 2: exercise 1, the spreadsheet with players’ scores, etc.

Print BOTH the spreadsheet showing the values and the spreadsheet showing the formulas, make sure the formulas are fully visible. To move from values to formulas, hold down the control key and press the key with the backquote on it (usually has backquote and tilde characters)

Lab 3: your picture, please don’t include too many dark colors as this takes up a lot of printer toner

MODULE 3:

Lab 1: Write down the URL of where you found an image to download, and what it is an image of. Nothing tastless or offensive is permitted.

Lab 2: Nothing to turn in.

Lab 3: For each of the items in the list, try to find it on the Internet. If you find it, write down the URL. At the end, write a couple sentences about how easy/difficult this exercise was.

PRELAB: If you added the class late make sure you do lab 1 first, schedule some extra time to catch up this week with lab 2.

MODULE 2:

Lab 1. Become familiar with word processing software. If you don’t know how to use Microsoft Word very well, refer to the handout included in this lab. If you want a lot of information about MS Word, the following web page is a 24 page CIT document on Word. Please don’t print this, it’s way too big!! Just use it on-line:

To start up MS Word, click on Start, then Programs, then Microsoft Office, and finally MS Word.

Lab 2. Become familiar with using a spreadsheet. Start MS Excel the same way as word, only select Excel rather than Word in the menu. A 2-page handout on Excel is included in this lab that should help you learn about Excel. One very important note about the lab: To enter formulas, such as A1+B1+C1, in Excel you must have an equals sign at the beginning of the formula. So you will need to type =A1+B1+C1. It doesn’t matter if you type upper or lower case letters for the column labels, so =a1+b1+c1 would be equivalent. You need only do the first exercise in Excel for Lab 2, if you wish you may do the others.

Lab 3: Start up MS Paint by going to Start  Programs  Accessories  Paint. Do not import an image into your drawing unless you know how to do this!! Feel to draw anything you want, you don’t have to draw your computer. If you are confused about how to do things in paint, try the help feature. Once you have made a little drawing, print it out to turn in.

Lab 4: MS Word will do everything you need for this exercise. It is optional, you don’t have to turn it in.

Module 3:

Lab 1: Download one image, and no sound files. You don’t want to use up all of your disk space. Put this image on S: in your UBFS space. Make sure to download the file that is linked to the lab in exercise 3, but you don’t need to unzip it yet! We will use that for exercises next week. No need to print anything here, but write down where you got the image and what it is an image of.

Lab 2: Read it but don’t do the exercises, they are specific to the authors’ version of this course.

Lab 3: I notice that some of the Lab 3 links don’t work! If you are having trouble finding lab 3, click on the link for Module 3, and click on Lab 3.3: Been Searchin’ at the top of that web page. Answer questions a-d in exercise 1. You will turn these in. For Exercise 2 the goal is to see just what kinds of things you can find on the Internet. See how many of these you can find, and write down the URL where you found each item. Write a couple sentences about how difficult or easy this was.
