Procedure A: Cooking Conversions

Can you make the following conversions to make a batch of chocolate chip cookies? If you get the conversions correct, then your cookies turn out good. If you get the conversions wrong, then your cookies are horrible and must be thrown away. Check your answers with me before you move on to procedure B.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

Combine the following ingredients in a bowl.

56.7g sugar = ______cup sugar

108.5g brown sugar = ______cup brown sugar

0.1575L margarine = ______tbsp. margarine

57g egg = ______egg(s) (how many?)

1 cup sugar = 113.4g sugar

1 cup flour = 120.49g flour

1 cup brown sugar = 217g brown sugar

Procedure B: How many what??

Use YOUR body to measure the following things. Also, record your partners’ measurements.
Cubit – the distance from your elbow to your middle finger. How many cubits long is the chalkboard by the TV?
Span – the distance from the tip of your thumb to the tip of your pinky when you spread out your fingers. How many spans tall is the door?
Digit – the width of a finger. How many digits long is the hood?
Fathom – the distance between your fingers when you spread your arms like an eagle. How many fathoms long is the room (the long side of the room)?
Handful – fill your hand with a substance. How many grams is your handful?
Measure the height of your head in cm. Measure you height in cm.

Questions:

How many heads tall are you? If the “perfect body” is 8 heads tall, then what is the percent error of your body?
Write the conversion factor between nL and L.
Why do we not use out bodies for measuring anymore?
Find three other body measurements that were used in the ancient times.
