1) COURSE DESCRIPTION
Students review structures of the language previously learned, concentrating on more complex as well as new aspects of Spanish grammar. Conducted entirely in Spanish, the course introduces students to new vocabulary for usage in situations of everyday living. The course also serves as an introduction to literary works by Spanish and Latin–American writers as well as to the history, geography and cultures of the Spanish speaking world. Students will be required to write short compositions and prepare oral presentations.
2) CLASS OBJECTIVES
A student who applies himself/herself consistently in this course will:
- Begin to understand basic Spanish as spoken by a native speaker
- Express himself/herself in basic Spanish to be understood by a native speaker
- Expand his/her Spanish thematic vocabulary
- Understand and implement basic grammar principles in spoken and written Spanish
- Understand and implement all simple verb tenses in spoken and written Spanish
- Understand the increased importance of the Spanish language in our society
- Begin to understand the variety of Hispanic cultures
3) INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCE(S): ¡Buen Viaje! Level 2; Glencoe, 2005
The instructor uses a variety of methods and techniques in this course.
Texts: The textbook and workbook are the basic materials for the course. Students will be expected to read and to complete corresponding exercises throughout the year.
Audio: When appropriate, the instructor may use audio materials (C.D.’s) to model correct pronunciation of new vocabulary. Also, students will listen to various excerpts from the text series and be evaluated for points (either homework exercises or as a quiz). The audio excerpts are from the text or worksheets are provided by teacher.
Videos: When appropriate, the instructor may use the corresponding video series. Students will view the videos and be evaluated on their comprehension, either verbally, written or both. Worksheets from the Video guide will be provided.
Visual: When appropriate, the instructor will use materials such as overhead transparencies or physical objects to introduce new grammatical concepts, new vocabulary or to evaluate the students’ ability to use the material covered.
Internet Use: The instructor may require use of the Internet to complete a homework assignment or a project. The “Glencoe” website may be used for this. Students without home access to the Internet should speak with the instructor before the assignment is due and access can be arranged.
Presentations: Students may be asked to make presentations (in Spanish) in front of the entire class. The topics will be related to either cultural studies or practical speaking exercises using the material and concepts from the course.
4)TUTORING SCHEDULE: Monday to Thursday 8:15a.m. – 8:45a.m.
5) REQUIRED MATERIALS (Supplies)
- Larousse Spanish/Spanish Dictionary
- One 2 inch 3-ring binder with paper and dividers.
- Loose-leaf notebook used only for Spanish class
- Loose-leaf paper only! (Very important: No jagged edges).
- A notebook. (“El cuadernillo de español”)
- A pen (blue or black ink only), a pencil, and a red ink pen. No other colors.
- Highlighters (min. 4 colors)

7) GRADING POLICY: Your grade will be calculated in the following manner:
Tests, quizzes, projects & other major assignments / 40%Homework / 20%

10) STUDENT EXPECTATIONS
- Attend class and be on time
- Be prepared to learn and perform your best
- Be respectful at all times
- Address all teachers and peers appropriately
- Do NOT use profanity
Homework: There will be a written homework assignment from Monday to Thursday. A student is expected to review the vocabulary and material EVERY NIGHT regardless of whether there is a written assignment. This daily dedication is essential to expand one’s proficiency in the language. The teacher awards points forcompletion of an assignment (i.e. workbook etc.) but occasionally the teacher may not award points or may collect and grade the assignment for a larger amount of points. Other than excused absences, No late work is accepted.
11) CLASSROOM POCEDURES
- Arrive to class and be seated when the bell rings.
- Students MUST be silent for all announcements.
- Students are not allowed to leave the room without a pass.
- Bring all materials to class every day. A student without the proper materials will receive a zero for the assignment.
- Students will work on Spanish material only in class.
- Please consult me about missed assignments during tutoring times or between classes, but NEVER during class.
- Raise your hand when you have a question or answer. You may speak when recognized by Coach Leija.
- Limited extra credit opportunities will be given at Coach Leija’s discretion.
- Food, drink, gum, and candy are not permitted in class.
- Pick up trash, papers etc. and dispose of them before leaving class.
- No writing, scratching doodling on the desks.
- Do not touch any posters, objects, flags in the room.
- Never touch the television, phone, or the instructor’s desk without permission.
- Be respectful always to other students and the instructor.
- Profanity is NOT allowed
Inability to comply with these expectations will merit the following consequences:
1st offense – warning
2nd offense – private talk
3rd offense – detention
4th offence – phone call to parent
5th offense – office referral
6th offense – parent conference
