Course Description:

Expands computer skills through the use of word processing, spreadsheets, database management, and presentation software for the integration of information.

CLASSROOM RULES

  • Be prepared. Come with your notebook, pencil, homework or other assignments.
  • Bring a positive attitude. You will not succeed if you do not care. If you look for the negative, you will surely find it.
  • Do your best!
  • Respect yourself, other students, your teacher, and school property. Respect is earned. . .not given.
  • The last 3 minutes of class will be dedicated to housekeeping. You are responsible for your workspace!
  • Only one student may be absent from the classroom at any given time.
  • Misuse of computers/equipment/furniture will not be tolerated!
  • Music is not to be played without headphones nor while I am giving instructions.

GRADING POLICY

The following grading scale will be used for class assignments, projects, activities, homework, and tests.

90 – 100A

80 – 89B

70 – 79C

60 – 69D

0 – 59F

The class will be divided into units of content. Each unit will have a select number of tasks that must be mastered by the student in order to pass the class. Demonstration of mastery will be in the form of performance of those tasks through activities, assignments, and tests. The following weights will be given to coursework:

  • Projects/performance60%
  • Assignments25%
  • Tests10%
  • Class preparedness/participation5%

Classroom Performance System (CPS) software will be used for some assessments and homework. Abuse of the keypads of any other part of the software program will result in loss of the privilege of using the system.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

The attendance policy in the code of conduct book will be followed. It is the responsibility of the student to obtain any missed assignments and to complete them in a timely fashion. After coursework has been graded and returned to students (usually within one week), late work will not be accepted. ATTENDANCE IN THIS CLASS IS CRUCIAL FOR GETTING A GOOD GRADE!!

HOMEWORK POLICY

Due to the nature of the programs we use, homework will not be sent home. Ample time will be given in class to finish all assignments. If necessary, students may stay after school Monday through Friday until 4:00. Assignments must be completed by the due date for full credit. After assignments have been graded and returned to students, no late assignments will be accepted without parent consultation and the student will receive a 0.

COMPUTER USE POLICY

Students will be using classroom computers to complete certain assignments and some projects will require students to access the Internet. Each student must sign an Acceptable Use Policy statement and have their student user id and password available at all times.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

3-Ring BinderThree ring binder. This binder will be used to organize and keep handouts, assignments and other information given during the semester.

Notebook Paper Although this is a computer class, notes may be taken to remember steps taken for a process.

BUSINESS

Classroom Safety Rules

  • Walk – don’t run!
  • Keep aisles clear!
  • Chair casters must remain in contact with the floor at all times.
  • Absolutely NO horseplay!
  • Do NOT throw objects!
  • No food or drinks allowed around the computers.
  • Report any hazardous situations immediately!
  • Only one person may be absent from the classroom at any given time.

Classroom Expectations

After reading over the syllabus and looking on the KY Tech Website, students and their parents have a basic understanding of the information that will be taught and learned throughout the year.

Safety Orientation

Students spend the first 3-4 days in the business and office classroom in safety orientation. This includes watching a video that illustrates common safety issues in the office setting, instruction regarding evacuation procedures, location of fire extinguishers, primary/secondary exits, and location of Material Safety Data Sheets. Students must take and pass safety test.

Safety Inspections

A safety committee will be created and include student members. A safety inspection of the business classrooms will be completed each month. The inspection checklist and safety form will be signed by each student member, the teacher, and the principal.

Evacuation

The following evacuation procedures will be followed:

  • School evacuation plan will be posted in the classroom where easily viewed by all students.
  • Students will be instructed in the proper evacuation procedures during orientation in the first three-four days of school.
  • Primary and secondary exits are identified.
  • Students will routinely practice proper evacuation procedures.
  • Outside meeting area is identified and is communicated to students during orientation.

MSDS Training

Students will be trained in the location of and proper use of material safety data sheets during safety orientation.

Accidents

All accidents should be reported immediately to supervisor/teacher as soon as possible after the accident occurs. An accident report should be completed and filed in the office.
