Edmonton, Canada. Our dream home is the culmination of combining the latest in energy efficiency with our desire to create a multi-generational living space for my mother, ourselves, and our two teenage children.

From the outset, we were adamant that our house would minimize our impact on the planet. To this end, we chose to build our house on a corner lot in order to take advantage of the solar exposure. This gave us the ability to incorporate passive solar heating with an array of large windows on the south side of the house, as well as the installation of 27 solar panels on the roof.Low flush toilets, cork flooring and LED lighting were also chosen to lessen our impact on the environment.

The less visible elements of the house are equally important. We opted for double-wall construction with a foot of insulation in order to bring our R-value up to 40 in the walls and 80 in the ceiling. We also opted for a renewable energy heating option and invested in a commercial-grade air-source electric heat pump, which can be powered by the solar panels, thus ensuring we would not be reliant on non-renewable energy sources.

The goal was to create a self-sufficient home that will ensure a degree of cost certainty into the future and make our home a sustainable model for others to follow. We are more than pleased with the final result and are proud to showcase it as part of the Eco-Solar Home Tour.
