Brief Course Description and Goals
EALC 215, Korean 3 is the third course of USC's four-year Korean Language Program which consists of the basic courses, EALC 115 (Korean I) EALC 117 (Korean 2) and EALC 215 (Korean 3). EALC 217(Korean 4), is the advanced portion of the curriculum. The purpose of this course is to help students acquire the intermediate level of Korean language skills such as reading, writing, speaking and listening in addition, to developing cross-cultural skills.

Objectives:

  • Students will be able to converse with ease and confidence when dealing with most routine tasks and social situations of the intermediate level
  • Students will be able to handle successfully many uncomplicated tasks and social situations requiring an exchange of basic information related to work, school, recreation, particular interests and areas of competence, though hesitation and errors may be occurred.
  • Students will be able to select the appropriate vocabulary given a range of topics and be able to write more complicated grammatical structures than Korean 2
  • Students will be able to narrate and describe in major time frames using connecteddiscourse of paragraph length.
  • Students will be able to describe cultural differences between America and Korea and compare them in Korean.
  • Students will be able to present their group skit in Korean for their final presentation
  • Students will be recommended for advancement to Korean 4 based on their performance in Korean 3.

Grade
(1) Attendance (15%)
Attendance is important to the success of this class. Therefore, if any student has more than 2 unexcused absences it will result in the lowering of your final grade. Excused absences, such as documented illness, family tragedy, religious observance, or travel for inter-collegiate athletics, will not affect your grade. More than five unexcused absences will automatically result in failure for the course.
(2) Quizzes (20%)
Quizzes will be given upon completion of every threechapters. Quizzes will be based on vocabulary and important grammatical structure. These will be easy if you have completed the exercises in the book but will be challenging if you have not. No make-ups will be allowed unless you have legitimate documentation..
(3) Participation (15%)
Good participation means coming to class on time having read the material assigned for the day, active listening and participation, showing a positive attitude, collaborating appropriately, and showing respect to your classmates as well as the instructor. Should there be any reason(s) that hinders your ability to participate, please speak with me and we will work together to resolve the situation.

The Mid & Final exam -
Each Exam will consist of a written exam and one oral presentation/interview.
(4) Midterm (20%)
Oral Proficiency Interview(10%)Feb 28th.
Each student will have face-to-face interview that determines how well a person speaks a language by comparing his or her performance of specific communication tasks with the criteria for each of ten proficiency levels described in theACTFL Proficiency Guidelines-Speaking (Revised 1999) (The guidelines will be given 2 weeks before your presentation).

Written exam (10%)March 6th.
Based on grammar, vocabulary and contents from Lesson 1 to Chapter 4
(5) Final (20%)

The final test will be given at the time specified in the course schedule
May 12th (Monday) : 11:00 am- 1:00 pm

Oral Presentation (10%)
1. Each group (4 students) will design and create their own skit (10 minutes) based on their interest about Korean culture in Korean.

2. Each group will have an individual/group meeting two week before final presentation with the instructor.

3. Your Skit will be presented on May 1st, 2008

Please follow the presentation rubric. The rubric will be given 2 weeks before presentation.

Based on the grammar and contents from Lesson 1 to Lesson 8
(6) Homework (10%)
Preparea homework notebook. Homework assignments are due the next class, unless a date in specified. No late assignments will be accepted. No credit will be given for homework completed during class time. In-class and homework problems are critical: they help you build and practice speaking and reading skills in Korean.

Next Steps: Korean 4
Learning a foreign language is a requirement for almost all the departments at USC. Students should take a language course for a minimum of three semesters. If students pass Korean 3, they will move on to Korean 4.
