The Nutrition Standards for High-Calorie Foods with Low Nutritional Values are set forth and announced as follows in accordance with Article 8 of the Special Act on Safe Food for Children:

Nutrition Standards for High-Calorie Foods with Low Nutritional Value (Draft)

Article 1 (Objective)

The objective of this Notice is to set forth nutrition standards for high-calorie foods with low nutritional values in accordance with Article 8 of the Special Act on Safe Food for Children so as to contribute to the prevention of childhood obesity and the creation of a healthy eating environment.

Article 2 (Definitions)

For the purpose of this Notice,

  1. “For snack use”means other uses of food than ordinary meals.
  2. “As a meal substitute” means use of food as a substitute for an ordinary meal.

Article 3 (Nutrition standards for high-calorie foods with low nutritional values)

①The nutrition standards for high-calorie foods with low nutritional values shall be set forth separately for children’s foods consumed as snacks and for children’s foods consumed as meal substitutes.

②The nutrition standards for high-calorie foods with low nutritional values shall be as in the Annex.

Article 4 (Relationships with other laws)

Unless otherwise provided in this Notice, the Labeling Standards for Foods, etc. (KFDA Notice), Labeling Standards for Livestock Products (National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service Notice) shall apply mutatismutandis to the definitions of “one serving,”“amount per serving,” etc.

Addenda

This Notice shall go into effect upon announcement.

Nutrition Standards for High-Calorie Foods with Low Nutritional Value

(Relating to Article 3)

  1. Applicable foods
  1. Snacks

1)Processed foods: confections (excluding Korean traditional confectioneries)/candies/sweetened ices, breads, chocolates among confectioneries; processed milks/fermented milks (excluding fermented butter milk, fermented milk powder)/ice creams among dairy products; fish meat sausage among processed fish meat products; fruit/vegetable beverages/carbonated beverages/lactic acid bacteria beverages/mixed beverages among beverages.

2)Prepared foods: confectionery/bakery foods and ice creams

  1. Meal substitutes

1)Processed foods: deep-fried noodles/vermicelli (limited to noodles packaged in ready-to-eat containers), rice rolls in laver (kimbap)/hamburgers/sandwiches among ready-to-eat foods;

2)Prepared foods: fast foods including hamburgers/pizzas, etc.

1)Foods containing more than 250kcal and less than 2g of protein per serving.

2)Foods containing more than 4g of saturated fat and less than 2g of protein per serving.

3)Foods containing more than17g of sugars and less than 2g of protein per serving.

4)Foods containing more than 500kcal or 8g of saturated fat or 34g of sugars per serving among those foods that do not fall under the category specified above in 1) to 3)

※In the case that one serving size is less than 30g, the values shall be converted to those based on the serving size of 30g.

  1. Standards for children’s foods for use as meal substitutes

1)Foods containing more than 500kcal and less than 9g of protein per serving;

2)Foods containing more than 500kcal and more than 600mg of sodium per serving. But in the case thatdeep-fried noodles/vermicelli (limited to noodles packaged in ready-to-eat containers), 1000mg of sodium per serving is applied to.

3)Foods containing more than 4g of saturated fat and less than 9g of protein per serving.

4)Foods containing more than 4g of saturated fat and more than 600mg of sodium per serving.But in the case that deep-fried noodles/vermicelli (limited to noodles packaged in ready-to-eat containers), 1000mg of sodium per serving is applied to.

5)Foods containing more than 1,000kcal or 8g of saturated fat per serving among those foods that do not fall under the category specified above in 1) to 3).
