KOMU Wins Best Newscast, Investigative Reporting and More

KOMU Receives 13 Heart of America Awards and an honorable mention at awards ceremony

COLUMBIA, MO–KOMU took home more than a dozenHeart of America awards from the Kansas City Press Club last weekend, including best newscast and 2nd place for Best Web Site.

“We are very honored to receive such recognition from the Kansas City Press Club,” said KOMU General Manager Marty Siddall. “To be honored by our peers is a true testament to the talent our students, reporters and anchors possess.”

KOMU won four gold, six silver, three bronze Heart of America awards from the Kansas City Press Club, along with an honorable mention for Jim Riek’s “Whatever Happened to…” feature. KOMU won gold for its KOMU newscast covering the Renick tornado. Chief Photographer Scott Schaefer won a gold award in Photojournalism for a story on drum corps members. KOMU Sports’ Eric Blumberg won a gold in Sports for his story on David Overstreet. KOMU also won a gold in Investigative Reporting for August Skamenca’s Target 8 story on deceased voters still on the roles.

Schaefer also took home a silver award in Photojournalism for a feature on a horseback riding school. Blumberg won a silver in Sports for his profile of Challenger baseball. KOMU also won a silver in Investigative Reporting for it’s month-long Immigration In-Depth series. Sarah Hill and Brad Noblitt won silver for Sarah’s Stories prom feature and Angie Bailey and Schaefer won silver for Regular Franchise Feature, with the “Your Health” report.

KOMU won bronze for its KOMU news at 10p.m., Josh deBerge, Schaefer and Holly Edgell won bronze for “Journeys with Josh: 7 Wonders of Missouri” and Schaefer won bronze in Photojournalism for his report on a man caught in a tree.

KOMU also won a silver Best Web Site, competing with all media in all markets – including print, radio and television. KOMU.com was re-launched in December 2005 to increase content and include streaming video. All content is locally produced.

“We continue to strive for excellence in our newscasts and we are bringing that same excellence to our web site,” said KOMU News Director Stacey Woelfel. “We are constantly looking at ways to expand to meet our viewers’ demands and it’s great to be recognized by the Kansas City Press Club for doing so.”
