Kogan’s March Madness History Tournament 2015

GOAL:

WHO is the MOST COURAGEOUS AMERICAN?!

The goal of this game is to choose, defend, debate, argue, provide evidence, and vote for the MOST COURAGE AMERICAN IN US HISTORY! You will choose 2 people who you think are the most courage Americans. Every week you and your team will debate another team in order to advance your person to the next round.

Step 1 – Choose your HERO!

  • Choose 2 Americans who displayed an unprecedented amount of courage.
  • 1 American Hero must come from a specific region (time period) and 1 American Hero can be whoever you ever you want.
  • Mr. Kogan will choose what specific region you Hero must come from. (Regions include: World War I (WWI), World War II (WWII), Vietnam War, War on Terror)
  • Write a 2-page double-spaced biography of each hero. (2-pages total)
  • Introduction (1 Paragraph)
  • Early life & family, education and any background information
  • Body (3 Paragraphs)
  • Did this person fight in a war and/or serve in the military?
  • If so, what did they do that was so heroic?
  • What recognition, honors and or awards did this person receive?
  • What did this person do that was so courageous?
  • Provide specific examples of what this person did to become a hero.
  • Did this person save someone’s life? Did this person pass a law that made life easier for people? Did this person make the world a better place?
  • PROVIDE EVIDENCE for your writing! Include quotes and/or citations from trustworthy sources.
  • Conclusions (1 paragraph)
  • What made this person a hero?
  • Why do you think this person is the most courageous American in US History?

Step 2 – QUESTION, ARGUE, DEBATE

  • Every week we will have a debate and discussion where two people and their teams will battle it out for who they think is the more courageous. For example, in Round 1, it can be Abraham Lincoln vs. Barak Obama
  • During each debate and discussion, the person and their team must present argument for why they think their person should win.
  • Mr. Kogan will provide further instruction on how teams will battle.

STEP 3 - VOTE

  • At the end of each debate the class will vote on who they think should advance to the next round.
  • The goal is to have your person advance to final round and WIN THE TOURNMENT.
